I agree Geoff, to bad my wife won't use S mode . Stuffed if I know why they have D set up the way it is. As for not selecting 5th till 60km/hr no matter what....that's a major cause of excessive fuel use in metro areas

    • I agree with that S4 at 2500rpm for towing is a sweetspot.
I am on my second 150 diesel, - 2 yearly novated leases. I average 12/100km real numbers not computer numbers they read around 10.5. The 2012 build one uses a tad less than the 2010 build one. Yes you can do better less by taking it easy, but then I get bored and go back to driving it like normal.

When towing with the van , it varies so much depending on traffic terrain and wind, but around 16-19 is typical.
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats. Sidewinder`s Dual Battery isolator and rear power outlet kit. Pirana Battery tray, Hayman Reese towbar with Toyota wiring kit and Brains`s guard.

      • I am more and more convinced something is very wrong with my 1kz I used to get about. 12ltr/100km average but am now lucky to get 18ltr/100km. The ol girl has done around 330,000 and is pretty much stock GXL. We had the fuel pump reconditioned around 300,000 and did the injectors at the same time. Any suggestions as to where to look next? Turbo boost normal, slightly hard to start, idles and runs fine and still pulls like a bull. Just a real guts.

          • After 3800km and 3 tanks of juice I finally have some meaningful figures. Display reads 8.9L/100km, fuel receipts tell me 8.59. I estimate about 50% highway Km but of those, a few hundred were with a fully loaded tradies A- frame trailer. About 50km of beach/sand work fully loaded. For the bulk of my driving I maintain the Eco light on. Normal accessories are only tow bar and about 100Kg of kit and the daily school run with the kids and their bits. I plan to keep a long term log so will update in the future. Like prado999 above, all in all - very happy.

I'm not a mechanic but From what I've read I would check the MAF (Mass Air Flow?) sensor.

I've got a stock MY14 GXL Manual with similar figures. Took it to Stockton Beach on the weekend and every bar on the fuel economy graph was off the chart at over 30l/100km

                • Hey All, I Just picked up a 2011 GX TD Auto. Did the fill up vs km and calculated at 10.3, this is alot of country driving and a bit of city driving. Its 113000 kms old and I'm driving like a bloody nanna trying to get closer to the economy they boast about. Is there any hints or something I can do to get it under double figures. I'm going to give it a service in a couple of thousand km's.

                  Cheers

Hey azza, do the normal thing and check/replace the air filter, fuel filter and make sure the oil is good. If you have just bought it i would probably replace everything just so you know where it's at. Then look at things like tyre pressure, tyre type, etc. also do you have any accessories that may be weighing it down?

                      • Cheers for the reply Andy, I think I'll bring the service forward and do it next pay. It's got an ARB Steel bar. Duel battery and cargo barrier that's about it at the moment. Tyres I'm running Bridgestone desert dueller all terrains which come with it, rear tyres replaced with the purchase. Was looking forward to the economy of the Prado but not seeing it yet. Hopefully after I give it a good service and get it squared up she'll improve.

                        • I've just checked and been averaging 10.5 for the past 4900km. Pretty happy considering it is 95% city driving by Mrs. Will see how this improves when driving to Melbourne.

                          • Drove from Newcastle to Brisbane today and the dash is telling me I'm averaging 9.4 L/100. In reality it's probably more like 9.8/9.9. Will know exactly when I fill it up. Probably on Tuesday on the drive home.
