    Re: Diesel Fuel Economy

From 8.80L/100km (almost all highway) to 10.98L/100km (almost all around town). I find that the in dash readout is about 0.6-0.8L/100km under reading. I am pretty light on the pedal but the other half can be a little heavy from time to time.

I have found that temperature makes a fair bit of difference on fuel economy. I have kept logs of fuel economy on my last 3 diesels and in the winter I get around 10-15% better fuel economy. Makes sense as the air is cooler, therefore denser and I don't tend to run the aircon quite as much I suppose.

For those of you who have an iPhone, download 'Road Trip Lite' from the App Store. It is excellent for keeping tabs on fuel economy. The full version lets you keep records for more than one car, and for more than just fuel.

WRT the fuel light and range readout. Just the other day I ran down to 0km, and then about 10km past that to then put in 140.07L. So I'm pretty happy with around 100km in reserve.

    Cheers!

      Re: Diesel Fuel Economy

Finally got around to calculating fuel economy. Have done 5000km.

GXL stock except with a snorkel.

10.4 L/100km - Based on using 128L of fuel around Brisbane (mainly trips of 10-30km)

The reading on the dash says 8.5L/100km. Oh well.

      Regards,

      K.

        Re: Diesel Fuel Economy

Just filled up my first tank, I calculated 10.3L /100km, mostly city driving stop/stop and a couple of longer trips down to the coast. Car "sits" on around 9.1 for city driving according to the computer, and has shown as low as 8.5. Anyways anything below 15-20L/100km is a big improvement over the old petrol V6 !

        cheers

          Re: Diesel Fuel Economy

I had a problem with my Prado 150 diesel with increased fuel usage (was 9-10l/100kms, went to 14l/100kms) not long after the 40,000kms service.

Went to Repco and purchased a spray can of CRC Air Flow Sensor cleaner, opened the bonnet, two screws on the air cleaner box to release the sensor, gave it 15 seconds of spray from both directions on both elements, let it dry then refitted.

The dealer told me that people queue up to purchase the Toyota diesel fuel additive but thought I would try the air flow sensor first. The dealer told me there is a lot of dirty fuel about at the moment due to the rain. Think the problem may be the amout of travel in very heavy rain over the past few weeks. I saw that the air box was wet (snorkel fitted) so gave the sensor a squirt.

Interesting that I found when it was cold it had no power and as it warmed up it got better but it was well down in power and the fuel economy was shot.

I would NOT recommend using anything else other than the proper cleaner due to the cost of the sensor. It was rather blackened but after a squirt it is now shinny again. Remember - do NOT touch the elements in the sensor, this will result in an expensive exercise as you will have to buy a new one.

The power and fuel economy appears to be normal, will know more after travelling a few more kilometers.

          Nifty.

            Re: Diesel Fuel Economy

Between trying to refuel your prado, and then a contaminated oxygen sensor...what next Nifty?
We Have just completed the second refuel on our new Prado.
Ours is a stock standard 150 diesel Prado auto (delivered "nude" as the dealer said....with no accessories at all) with Grandtrek tyres (until worn down)... and now with some newly fitted Prorack "whispbars" (for surf board and stand up paddle board)....I liked the whispbar racks as they are a very low profile roof rack, and they seem to be nice and quiet and they were easy to fit....and on special at Supercheap $245
            Anyway......
1435km was driven on 135.5 litres diesel = 9.44l/100km actual mileage by my calculations.
"8.8 l/100km" was indicated on the trip computer: " (ie trip computer is under reading by 0.64 l/100km) at an average speed of "58km/hr"; over "24hr 51mins" driving time, with "41km" remaining endurance indicated.
This was the second tank full to the brim of diesel in this Prado, (filled to the brim easily..phew)...I'm still running the engine in, driving mostly highway, trips of about 80km, and always less than 110km/hr, with gentle varying of speed and gentle acceleration on the way to work.
I was paranoid about the shakes, rattles, hums and bumps at 1,500 RPM...so far just some very slight engine "laboring" type sound noticed at 1,500 rpm at about 80km/hr...no rattles or shakes at all ...(lets hope it stays that way)..and the slight "labouring" sound is eliminated with a shift to S4... its like it is trying to drive in 5th gear a little to early, and then starts to labour slightly at 1,500 rpm.
I love this car so far, we are delighted with it, we have had all the seats filled with 5 virtually adult sized kids, my wife and self...no worries...and am so pleased I was convinced to get an auto. Most of our off roading will be beach (Bribie Isl, Double Island Pt, Rainbow Beach, Inskip Point, Moreton & Fraser Islands) and some gravel, but the car will be 80% highway use, and also towing camper trailer or boat (with or without surf boards.... Thanks Prado Point, for facilitating some very useful information sharing and very interesting discussions.

              Nifty.
Just a footnote for Nifty (brother). He is now in Cairns back to Toyota with a couple of new problems.
              1. Motor won't start when button pressed (sometimes starts, sometimes just goes 'clunk')
              2. Half of the warning lights on the dash have decided to shine in the NQ light.
              3. Still can't fill the bl**dy thing up in one hit. Last 30 liters takes a long time!
              4. Don't mention about the fuel economy!!!!!!
              5. Headlights have been replaced under warranty when they showed moisture inside?
              6. Thinking of buying a lemon sticker for the back window.

See you when you get back (if you make it)

Don't fear brother, i can always hire a car trailer and pick you up.

                Re: Diesel Fuel Economy

Just finished the first 1000km on our 150 GXL auto. 10.8l per 100k. In the Flinders this week so it will be interesting to see how this changes if at all. Vehicle is only fitted with our Bridgestone D694 LT's set at their normal 34 psi. It will be interesting to see how the fitout changes consumption. Normal fitout is everything and this time we are adding a Kaymar rear wheel carrier as the heavier tyres we have been using and carrying on the rear door wore out the door hinges on the old Prado and that was a rather expensive job to have them replaced so I don't want to repeat that exercise with the new one

                Regards

Hi all. When she was standard i could get 9L/100 @ 115kph , add bullbar, roofrack, mudflaps now its around 11L/100 @ 115kph. Add a coromal camper to the ass and im looking at 15L/100. Still better than my old ML Triton tho. I also have the refulling problem if i let the tank get around 1/4 and fill up. I never have the trouble at the farm when i fill up with a gravity tank.. No foam..

                    Hi all

Just about up to 800 kms - economy still showing 9.4l/100- mix of around town and freeway driving.

Think I wil get a Scanguage to test the accuracy. The test will be in 3 weeks time when the Van goes on the back now the towing hitch etc is done.

20,000ks on the clock just filled up with the bp hiflow pump and its full as i could see the fuel in the neck ... not a drop more could be squeezed in

                      1430k's for 128.86l's giving 9.0l/100k's

only a arb steel bar has been fitted so far so ill update as the options get bolted on tyres changed etc... im doing suspension next so that will be interesting as i dare say more drag exposing the underbelly of the beast more

                        Hi All

Just completed my first run with the Caravan in tow. About 120kms each way.

Trip out averaged 12.8 L/100 and return trip 12.5L/100. Quite happy with that for towing a 2t van. Previous commodore 17.5 towing a smaller van

1530 kms on the clock so far.

Found the Sports mode very helpful for the uphill down dale as well as the engine braking on a few down hill runs.

                        cheers

                          Re: Diesel Fuel Economy

Update from my previous comments. Another tsv - mt ISA trip plus a bit more highway. 3500 kms in less than week. Average 12.9 by screen. Almost all on cruise and 115 km/h.

Had back in townsville last 2 weeks and economy up to 14.2 l/100

Drove to charters the other week with dump trailer and got 15 on way there and 12.5 on way back. 100-110 km/h.

Rang with petrol and he has averaged 13 l/100. Wishing I went petrol. Drove my 120 petrol the other week and miss the power and quiet.
Still like the diesel (except overtaking).

Now going to get chip/ exhaust I think.
150 GXL Diesel (white) 09/10. ARB Deluxe bullbar colour coded, Lightforce 240 (HID), Winch, Tuffdog suspension, Mickey Thomson ATZ, tint, UHF, airbags, compressor, dual batteries,... and more stuff.

Mine slowly seems to be getting better, but I am putting it down to temperature getting a little cooler here in Sydney. Did a run to Canberra and back the other week and got 9.8 L/100km (on the dash) sitting on 115 kmh. Calculating it myself I come up with 10.02 L/100km.

Most of the around town running around sits up at 10.8 L/100km. Calculating this myself I come up with 11.03 L/100km.

I'll keep updating as time goes by.

Just did 1100kms mixed country driving along with a few hours of beach and sand dunes. Car was loaded up most of the time and I had a far bit of stuff on the roof which didn't help with the trip home into a howling head wind.

Average consumption was 11.2l/100km, my computer said 11.7l/100km so I must be the only person who's computer gives a result worse than actual. I can't get below about 12l/100km around town.

Also did a number of checks on the speedo and odometer. Found that the speedo reads about +2% and the odometer is out by -1.2%.

                                Hi,

I am currently getting 8.6ltrs per 100klm's out of my standard 2011 model GXL auto with only 760klm's on the clock. 20 percent of that would be city driving and 80 percent freeway. I am quite pleased with this seeing as though I clock up 1000klm's a week.

                                Regards Andy
