While driving my car he made the comment that unless you really pay attention and know what you are looking for that there is no sign of the old engine harshness around 1500rpm.

After driving my Prado he was pretty keen to see what I had done, I gave him the full details and he said that he would be completing a report on the fix to submit to Toyota.
Great work Steve, hopefuuly we will see a new TSB out of this one.

    • Anybody know whether the "Right Hand Front guard lining was removed, body deadner fitted on inner front quarter and it gone." fix mentioned in post 161 has aTSB number?

Sounds similar to krypto's fix to me.

      • I'll be interested in the result if anyone else try's this fix. Riv, knowing Toyota you may be waiting a while for a TSB as my dealer checked and found nothing in the system other than the known temporary fixes.

Probably get a better quality job if you do it yourself.

        • As its got colder here in the UK now - I notice the 1500rpm drone again - despite the 'Engine Management System re-flash' to stop the hesitation out of roundabouts/corner when going uphill I had done a couple of months ago.... so look forward to a pucker TSB to present to my local dealer ... and am still awaiting my new longer mud flaps ETA 15.12.2011.....

          • Sorry Riv, my dealer didn't give me a TSB number.
I was told the key is to put body deadner on inner front quarter as the D4D resonates somewhat..

            • Well I fitted a Safari snorkel today and the 1500 RPM vibration is gone. I have had my 150 for a little over 12 months and this problem as well as the flat spot saga leave me believing that Toyota service is the worst of any manufacturer. It is certainly the poorest I have encountered.

              • I can't believe this thread has run to 18 pages since I started it!. My dealer in Adelaide did chop the tab and pack something out fix mentioned numerous times in this thread and I've found it works a treat. The bride and I have just run up 6000 km on a trip from Adelaide to Fraser Island and I'm very happy with the fix. I did print out out all the replies on this thread and gave them to the service guys to avoid the "it must only be you" response and that worked pretty well. Vox Pops does work it seems.....
                Cheers, Soz.

                • I am having vibration around 1300rpm coming from bottom RHS of windscreen, it's really annoying. I seem to hear it louder when the window's down when I'm driving.

A dealer had already told me it could be the air intake hose that needs insulating to avoid it vibrating against car body. I have tried unplugging the hose slightly or completely, it used to diminish the problem some months back, but now it's not doing anything, and the vibration is louder than ever...

If the air intake hose is unplugged from where it connects to car body at entrance of airbox, it can't be the cause of the vibration I'm hearing, can it ?

I have tightened the air box down with the 4 bolts at the bottom, and even tried wedging foam under the airbox, but no difference at all...

This is really bugging me... I'd really like to defo know what the cause is before I undertake dismantling fender etc and insulating air intake... Hopefully not for nothing...

It really sounds like the windscreen is vibrating (but I really don't think so)

The vibration only occurs at 1300rpm precisely, whatever the gear... But not when no gear is on (park mode, it's an automatic)

Thanks in advance for your advice and experience...

                  • Hi Guys,

I have had my GX just over 5 months and its just clocked over 15000k. I have a snorkel and already had the 2400rpm fix applied at the 10k service (thanks Riv). I have a rattle at low speed coming from the right hand front ... somewhere. I thought it was the door speakers but reckon it's the right hand corner of the dash. It happens on bitumen or dirt but usually when you have the foot lightly on the accelerator. If you push harder on the pedal it disappears. I haven't taken much notice of the RPMs yet as I'm still trying to locate the source. But at the speeds and load I'm applying, I reckon 1500 is sounding right.

So the snorkel theory is out for me. Will check the lower right windscreen though as that is pretty close to the source. I'm still 5000k from next service so could be a month or 2 before I report it to Toyota.

                    • Tim, take out the rubber trim where the A pillar meets the guard. Note the plastic tab sticking out from the plastic trim running down the windscreen. You will see a wear mark where it has been rubbing on the A pillar. Cut the tab off and it should improve things a fair bit. There is also a Toyota Australia TSB (I don't have the number sorry) for replacing the trim under the windscreen wipers and sticking it down with special tape.

I ahve both the above fixes done to my 150 and it is much better although it still returns a bit from time to time. I find moving that rubber trim a little (up and down a few mm) tends to make it dissapear for a bit longer.

                      • Tim,

I am not an engineer but common sense tells me that packing out a dash or removing bits of trim may reduce rattling but is unlikely to solve the problem. I was very doubtful about the snorkel solution but with 3,000 km on the clock since having mine done, there is no trace of the vibration. I suggest you find a 150 with a snorkel fitted and listen to the air intake when the car is at idle under light load. There is a lot of rumbling coming from the engine and I can now understand how a badly designed intake could cause this problem. It is incredible that Toyota remain indifferent to this and other widely acknowledged issues.

                        • I was also amazed that they didn't fix this problem as it is fairly straight forward to solve. I've got rid of the engine vibration on my Prado without fitting a snorkel.

                              • Just emailed my dealer in anticipation of the 20k service in a few weeks. I even attached a recording of the rattle noise and asked them to check and/or escalate with HQ. I also referenced the many similar complaints on pradopoint.com. I dont want the "apprentice" pulling things apart for no reason and will require an explanation as to what the dealer will do to rectify this. Surely, there must be some directions by now.
