I did fix no.3 myself. After spending a lot of time trying to fix the problem my local service manager took down some information on my mod, but I never heard anything further. It seems reading some posts the some Dealers have done mod 3 but I've never seen a TSB.

Having experienced the difference that it makes and how simple it is to do, it's one mod that I'd do straight away myself if I bought another Prado.

What I don't understand is why Toyota haven't fixed the problem. There are a million and one really simple and cheap ways to fix induction related issues straight out of the factory. All the Toyota fixes seem to be targeted at fixing the symptoms (rattles) and not the cause (vibration).

    • Probably because they dont give a you know what as the Prado's keep sailing out the door anyway and as we all find out sooner or later the after sales service is somewhat........ well you know what I mean.

      • My 150 had fix 1&2 done 2 years ago, and I did the Krypton inspired fix 6 months ago and still the drone and vibes continued. Spoke to dealer at 80,000k service about issue again and rang Toyota costumer experience that afternoon. Next day dealer rang and asked to have car for 2 days. Dealer said there was definitely an issue and that Toyota technicians wanted the car for a day. 3 weeks later they had it for two days . Picked it up yesterday and the drone/ vibration has been reduced to an acceptable level. Not entirely eliminated but it is much better. What did they do? I forgot to ask but I can't see any mods. Air box and mounts appear untouched,(still had dust on exterior lid and the packing washers I had used to centre the air box were still in place) inner guard had not been removed. Looked underneath etc could not see any changes. Wondered if it was a fuel remap. They also changed the tail shaft after complaining at every service about the slip joint sticking. By the way I had asked the dealer ages ago about a snorkel to fix the drone problem and they said they had tried but one they fitted actually made the drone worse. Car is going back in 1000k for a tail shaft lube,so will ask what the mod was.

        • I've just realised today the dealer has removed the duct in the inner guard, which I am less than happy with. The noise has nothing to do with the inner guard, what it needs is a resonance duct in the intake before the air filter or off the actual air cleaner box. The noise comes form further up the intake ( every 4 cylinder diesel will do the same thing, the design of the intake accentuates it ) resonance chambers on the intake will fix it. Will they ever fix it?. Who knows.

          • I agree it's an engine problem, maybe intake design, fueling or exhaust or combination is difficult to know. Although as i have said before reading some of the posts about changing the catalitic converter sounds promising. I've now done 10,000 k since the Toyota Techs ( not the dealer mechanics) had my car for the 2 days and made their changes to fix the vibration problem. The result is a much nicer vehicle. The drone has all but disappeared and the vibration is at least 50% better. Before they did this latest fix i would never have bought another diesel prado but now i'm quite happy to. Still don't know what the techs did to it and when asked, the service adviser said they wouldn't tell him, and that they were very secretive. The one thing i do know, is that the shift points in the transmission are changed. It shifts down much earlier on hills and doesn't labour.Driveability is much better. Fuel economy has suffered by about .5 to 1 l/100k , more in hilly terrain. Overall there is still room for improvement (will change to a high flow cat as soon as its out of warranty) but this latest fix made a big difference.

            • Which dealership was this Jeff?? I want to be able to refer my dealer to them when i get the usual run around fron them when i go in for a 30k service which will be comming up shortly.
The rattle in mine is driving me nuts

              • Torque Toyota North Lakes. For what it's worth they said my car was the first to be done and that mine wasn't the only Prado that they wanted to do. I really think that the key to getting something done is to ring Toyota Customer Experience (the number is in the handbook). The two times i rang them i got a phone call from the dealer the very next day.Hope you have some success.

                • Installed a pre filter glass watertrap and this fixed my vibrations to a minimum. Smoothed out idle and got rid of a lot of the diesel rattle as well

Must be made from the same crystal that Brocky used in his energy polariser

                      • Well i took my car in for it's 30k service and got the vibration checked/fixed as well. The guys did a good job and did all the normal Toyo fixes like lifting the airbox and tightening all the bits & pieces in and under the guard and checking that i had the latest (non rattling) parts around the windscreen and in the guard. But the rattle was still there a bit and they informed me that my catchcan was causing the rest of the noise, well my first thought was "nah this is BS" but i went out and spoke with the w/shop guys who told me that when they unhooked it the noise was gone. So we went for a drive, then unhooked it and went for another one and the noise was GONE completely.
Once again great work by the guys and good on them for again taking extra time to show me first hand the difference to help convince me that they had fixed the isuue but i had to sort out the catchcan for a perfectly quiet run.
I spent today relocating my catchcan by fabricating a different bracket using 2 existing bolts and a threaded hole behind the airbox. She's quiet as a baby now.

By the way, the Roo called it by saying the Sunshine crew would sort it out, i had my doubts but he was on the money once again........ I think that's a couple of beers we're up to now mate.

                        Cheers

                        • Had my 150GXL in for a service today, and it's returned with a very noticeable rattle at about 1500-1700RPM! I haven't read the previous 23 pages, but is it likely they've dislodged something in the 3yr/60,000KM serivce? Definitely wasn't there prior to service.
Sound like it's coming from front right side, but that could be just because of sitting position..... might connect the GOPRO on each corner and see....

                          • Has anybody had a chip and exhaust fitted to see what effect that has to eliminate the vibration and noise from the intake?

Hi James, do you have a photo of the bracket and installation of your catchcan. I have recently upgraded to a 150 and have the same very prominent noise coming from mine since I installed my catchcan. It is very annoying to say the least.

                              Thanks

                              • Droning on...

                                Hi

Tried packing under the airbox and adjusting the bolts. No real improvement.

Made up three mounts to replace the three bolts that hold down the airbox.
The airbox still resonates but does not transfer most of the vibration to the car body.
Used a short length of rubber tube pushed partly over a plastic carpentry plug
then slid a rubber grommet to the midpoint.

The carpentry plug sits in the bolt hole and the rubber tube locates the airbox.
The grommet holds the airbox off the metal guard.

Much much better at 1,500 revs.

Will make up an all rubber mount next to replace the carpentrey plugs
                                which might be even quiter.

                                Cheers
