This is one of the things the dealership did, and I agree that the symptoms are gone but the actual vibration remains. As per previous posts, the vibration is caused by something not quite being in "balance", fixing the tab removes the resulting rattles.

    Cheers

I've had my VX since August and a couple of weeks after purchase the vibration started. 1500 rpm under load. Of course the whole country is full of 80 zones so you spend most of the time at 1500 rpm with this bloody noise driving you mad. I did a stationary test with the bonnet up, car in gear and loading the engine up to 1500 rpm against the brakes and the noise isn't there. Not sure what that means but it may be a clue. I rang the 1800 number and they weren't too interested although did take a couple of details. They said it had to go through a dealer to have a DPR logged against it. Rang the dealer and they have heard of the problem but didn't have a fix yet. In for a service on Monday and we'll see what hapens but from past experiences with dealers I expect to be left dissapointed. Once they've taken your $70K, they seem to lose ineterest but I'm going to annoy the hell out of them till they fix my $70K rattle.

Drop it into S and down shift to stop the engine 'lugging' ..... sorted ...... :?

I had the guard packed with foam by Cornes Toyota at the 10,000 service, this certainly reduced the 1500 RPM right hand side dash rattle by 80%, but now I am at 16,000km's the rattle has slowly returned. It is probably only 20-30% better than before the foam was fitted. So a better fix needs to be sorted from Toyota.

I've got 1300kms on the clock. I did not notice any rattling upon pickup just the vibration of what I think is normal for a diesel. After driving for an hour at 80km/h today I noticed the dreaded rattling which seemed to be coming from behind the head unit. I have the car booked in on Monday for the first service, I will call them again and add this to the list of things for them to fix.

Okay this is weird, on the 1hour drive back on the same 80km/h road, I couldn't reproduce the rattling... Maybe it's just the onset of things to come...

I assume your tacho was on 1500RPM? Are you trying to notice the vibration or the rattle caused by the vibration?

Sorry, now that I reread my post, I meant the rattle not vibration. Let me edit those posts I made. Yes the tacho was on 1500rpm and I went from 1400-1600 to find the vibration, and it's definitely more evident at 1500rpm. There always was vibration at 1500rpm, ever since I picked up the car. Only the rattling has started becoming evident in the last couple of days. I think the vibration has to do with the way toyota tuned the car for maximum fuel economy driving, as it does sound like it's struggling - but then again, it's my first diesel so I wouldn't know what's normal. My MY10 automatic camry sounds like it's about to stall when I turn the a/c on at idle lol.

The dash rattle will come and go, mine was fixed by the dealer by placing some packing under the plastic panel that sits beneath the windscreen wipers on the drivers side.

Well what a read! 20 mintues ago I sat down and searched for "1500 rpm" and bingo. :?

Have had my Kakadu TD for less than a week and started to notice something odd in "the" rev range......

Seems the "issue" is still coming through on new builds after all this time.

Interesting to read all the fixes but at the same time a little disheartening. Having just traded out of the first model run of the 200 series which had all the known "issues", I thought I may have been lucky this time round to dodge any problems like this.

Off to Mr Toyota we go!

Welcome to the club.......while your at it, go and have a read of the 2400RPM flat spot and the binding drivetrain/thump noise when stopping (a carry over from the 120 series....an interesting read both here and over on the 120 series discussion as well BTW) threads as well.

                          Tailshafts...don't get me started.

As long as I don't have to check the fuel everytime I pull up to fill with oil, I will be happy!

I suggest people try sports mode and then slect 5 (4 seems to be the default when you switch over). The car changes up and down as it should but is much more responsive and there is no more lugging! Unfortunately the 2400rpm flat spot is still there but overall IMO it performs much better.

have any of your dealers dealt with the D4D dash rattle problem yet?
On the off chance they have no idea (likely )....
there is a little plastic tab on the windscreen trim on the exterior of the RHS A Pillar that sits underneath the rubber cover at the bottom corner of the windscreen...
due to the intake being in the RH guard it naturally cause some vibration of the quarter panel and is being transfered through to the dash area via the plastic tab...
After removing the tab from the trim (which does not cause any negative affect) the vibrations around 1500rpm are gone
Hope it helps you guys, let me know
I had mine in for the 20K service and reported the vibration. The dealer told me they fixed it be replacing a missing screw in the bonnet guard. Predictably, this did not resoolve th e problem, in fact it seems to be worse. I just read your post and tried to find the plastic tab you refer to. I am either looking in the wrong place or the dealer has already removed it. I pulled off the rubber cover but could not see any plastic tab. There are a lot of things arond that area that could rattle due t the inherent vibration in the engine. Like others have posted I don't think one thing is going to fix it. This is a big call, but my GU Patrol was smoother than this thing!

Would just like to report that I followed Sigmas instructions, have driven 400 ks since and no annoying rattle at 1500 rpm.
Thanks Sigma for the easy to follow instructions.

                                Happy New Year to all.
