  • Re: D4D vibration at 1500rpm

Our VX has not had the rattle but has or did have the noise at 1,500 rpm.

I fitted a Beaudesert Exhaust full system, not because of the noise but because I thought the car was a bit gutless compared to our V6 120.

Anyway, system has markedly smoothed the engine across the full rpm range, then I began plus using BP diesel (apparentley higher cetane?) that seems to have smoothed things out a bit more.

Could be my imagination, but my wife has commented too.

Hi I can't understand why you would have to fit a snorkel when the vehicle should not have this problem. I do not like the look of the snorkel and what about warranty with all these after market changes, I am sorry but I feel Toyota has a duty to solve this problem. I will not try to get any more information from this forum because they seem not to like what I said, it is only the truth.

Add my VX to the list.

I noticed the vibration within 5min after picking it up from the dealer in Dec 2010. I used to be a mechanic (that was a few years ago) and after reading all the posts here I can tell you that all the ‘fixes’ listed are really just hiding the noise not fixing the vibration. Stop the rattle in the air intake and given time one will start in the dash etc, the fundamental issue needs to be fixed. To me it seems the engine is labouring and changing to a higher gear when the rev’s are too low, this is a design flaw that Toyota could fix, but at the price of having to change their published fuel consumption figures which they wont like!

I do understand that the models being released in Japan have had a new engine fixed, fingers crossed that they didn’t fine an engine balance problem and have fixed it in the new model and current owners will have to live with it.

The 120 D4D and hilux D4D don't do it and my (limited) understanding is that the only difference is the intercooler location. I rekon it is lugging and therfore a engine management issue. If it's a balance issue it's time to trade in (if it bugs you) and wait for the rumoured V6.

              1) You do not follow forum rules. ie. posting and reposting topics that have been covered
              2) You are complaining to the wrong people. PradoPoint is a community of Prado owners, not an official Toyota forum where your every cry is answered. If your issue is so severe, bring it up with Toyota. People on this forum are just like you and I.... regular Joes.
              3) Forum etiquette, or anything in life for that matter, requires giving as well as taking. I, or I dare say WE, don't want "takers" who don't give back and then become inactive.

              It's only the truth.

              Back to topic:
I'm getting a bit annoyed with the lugging at 80km/h, I sometimes shift to 4th and slow down a little. I may very well get a snorkel fitted. At least then I won't get stuck when Victoria gets flooded again

I purchased a new GXL D4D Automatic in July 2010. I also noticed a noise and vibration at 80 KPH, which corresponds to 1500rpm. The noise sounds like the road noise you would get driving over a textured surface like cattle grid or highway warning strip (EG warning strip at the edge of the road or end of freeway strips). It is worse on certain road surfaces. It is particularly annoying because there are a lot of roads in WA with a speed limit of 80 KPH There is no vibration from the mudguards (yet) but there is a definite sensation of vibration throughout the vehicle. I reported this to the Toyota Service Devision at my first service. They claimed that they could not detect it and were be unaware of similar problems with other Prados. They said they would make a Incident Report in case "it did turn up as a fault later on". I shall be printing out the page of complaints on Pradopoint.com and make another complaint to my Service Agents. Thanks for the information Pradopointers.

Thank you all....I am indebted to you all for this valuable information. I will report my issues to Toyota and try to pressure for 'some' action as opposed to denial...which is what I got from the Graham Werner dealership in UFTG Melbourne when I complained about this issue at the 1000Km free inspection.
At least it is now registered and in writing on the inspection report.
                  The transmission tweak is interesting...
Snorkell...maybe I will. New exhaust...possible. I have already spent 65K with all options...it's hard to reach for some more$$.

Toyota need to look after us a bit better...
Otherwise it's a good machine...I had a GQ 2.8 with an after market intercooler and this thing is like a Limosine after that beast.

                  Cheers...happy motoring

Add us to the list. We picked up our auto March 2011 GXL last week and after a weekend away, noticed the Prado seemed to be changing up to 5th too early, causing it to sound like it's in too high a gear 80k at 1500-1600 RPM. No rattles as yet; just the resonance of a gear too high for the RPM.

I've read this entire thread with interest and to me, a software upgrade is in order, to change when the auto box changes up into 5th .... has anyone heard of an software upgrade that changes the gearing?

Looks like I will be using S mode for the time being. Kind of defeats the purpose of having an auto though

Sass, there apparently is a software change that relates primarily to tranny over heating issues (I don't have that problem BTW) which apparently changes the way the tranny downshifts (there is a separate thread on that topic under Drive train).

There are mixed opinions as to whether that fix does anything for this problem or the 2400RPM flat spot issue (there's another thread for that issue as well). I personally don't believe that fix (if your dealer knows about it, mine doesn't) will work for either problem.

Unfortunately Toyota Aus has their head in the sand on this one (as well as the 2400rpm prob which is worse as it can be down right dangerous).

I'm about to take my D4D back (again) as the fix they applied to stop the rattle coming from the plastic under the wipers has now (after less than 10k) failed and it is back.

                      • Re: D4D vibration at 1500rpm

The gearbox fix was applied to my vehicle, and there was a slight change to the shift pattern and have not experienced the issue since.

That said, it made no difference to the vibration issue or the 2400RPM flat spot.

The gearbox fix does not change the gearing (that is mechanically defined) but does allow the box to shift down earlier under load to avoid overheating the tranny fluid.

The flat spot @ 2400 should be able to be fixed by remapping the ECU, but there does not appear to be acknowledgement that this is an issue. There are reports that "chipping" the D4D sorts this, but I do not have first hand experience.

The 1500RPM vibration is still there, although the work done by the dealer (packing and tightening) means that the resulting rattle has not returned, the vibration is a result of design, so any fix that does not address engine/drivetrain balancing is merely treating the symptoms.

It is annoying, and this is amplified with the amount of 80K limits in the national capital, but from what I read here it will be easier to to get the speed limits raised that it will be to get the problem addressed.

                        Cheers

The problem is that the gear box is changing into 5th too early, causing resonance, which is then manifesting in rattles. I'm not at the rattle stage yet (having only 500k on the clock) though the resonance can sometimes go right through me!

But you may be right .... shall I start the petition now to change the 80k speed limits to 90k?

I have a GXL TD manual and don't suffer any vibrations, maybe I'm just lucky at this stage.

And you won't because you have a manual and hence you choose the gearbox shift point which overcomes the problem.

                                Hi Everyone,

Just thought I'd share my experience in fixing the 1500RPM vibration issue by simply having a Safari Snorkel fitted. The car is new (2500km's) and although I didn't have any major vibrations behind the dash / windscreen area, the labouring of the engine and resonating sound created was very annoying to say the least. Once the snorkel was fitted, the improvement was remarkable. No more labouring of the engine and the resonance has virually gone.

I'm very happy with the outcome and would recommend this as a solution for those having similar problems.
