2016 GD 2.8 camshaft failure

I have now been made aware of 2 seperate cases of camshaft failure in the new 2.8 deisel Hilux motors, one of them being my brother in law's car . As I have the same motor in my Prado and i only have a year left on warranty I'm quiet concerned . Has anyone got any more info on these failures and what's causing them ?

What was the mode of failure? I have heard of early timing chain issues but nothing beyond that.

ive heard of one or two other timing chain failures , might have been on a Hilux. there was an upgrade kit available for this issue with part numbers listed somewhere?? does scare me a bit ,my local dealer wont even admit there is a problem with the DPF so good luck getting them to repair a broken timing chain.
Still , if you took the issue to the ACCC you could argue that timing chain failure on a $60,000+ car is not acceptable.

I'm not sure as yet will try and extract more out of my brother in law but he and a post in the hilux forum simply stated camshaft failure . What is the fix for the timing chain issue ? I can't handle the ideid you of paying 65$ up front for a unreliable cat we plan on traveling in

Honestly I'd be more worried about your DPF than the timing chain. Unless it's showing signs of possible failure then your local dealer is obviously not under any obligation to "fix" a problem that isn't there- My advice would be to enjoy the car and to keep driving it, you see plenty of these cars on the road in the sticks doing hard yards in front of a big boat or caravan so I don't think you'll have any dramas. If it's of serious concern to you, make a note in your diary and that way if you've ever got issues with it you can prove that you raised the matter with the dealer. As for a "fix" I don't really think there is, as I said earlier, how do you fix a problem that hasn't manifested itself in your car yet? It's still a new motor made by Toyota and as such there are going to be little niggling things with it (mainly DPF related at this point by all accounts) but that's something that every manufacturer experiences, it's their customer care that sets them apart and how they deal with it. As someone else has said, you've got a strong case to take to the ACCC if it shits itself and they don't want to come to the party if it's out of warranty, you should be able to get at least 150K trouble free motoring out of a car like that at a bare minimum- and you'd reasonably expect more with the sort of price they're asking for one when it's brand new.

i lifted this kit of upgraded parts from the Hilux forum. I seem to get the idea that chains are noisy for a while before they let go.

Apparently Toyota have issued a recall for the timing chain issue in this 1gdengine. The crankshaft sprocket is machined incorrectly and causes the chain and other components to wear and become noisy and eventually fail.The fix is new chain, tensioners, guides and sprockets.

thanks for letting us know , first ive heard of an actual recall so far. Only 2 days ago a young girl on the Hilux FB page posted about losing a motor at 20,000klm !!
