Re: Oil change (or not) at first service

Just had the 1k service - $106 for an oil and filter change. Cheap insurance I reckon...
Damn! I got ripped of @ $120 for oil and filter...

I bought my new Prado from Perth and went to pick it up last month.
The salesman who I bought it off wasn't there when I went to collect the car.
So got shown around the car by another salesman.
He mentioned the next service was at 10,000km and pointed to a service sticker on the windscreen.

Anyway didn't think too much about it till later on.
I then noticed the service sticker said next oil change at 1,000km and not 10,000km.
So I checked the service book and the next oil change was meant to be 10,000km.
After a bit of thought, I decided to change the oil within the first 1,000km, as it would only cost 30 mins of my time and $90-100.
So I got an oil filter from a toyota dealers, and got some 15W40 Castrol Magnetic diesel oil.

As I was driving up the coast home to the Pilbara, I changed the engine oil and filter at 814km at Kalbarri.
I decided to keep the old filter and open it up when I got home.

Below are some photos of the metal in the filter from the engine.
Most of this metal will be just from the engine machining and being built up in the factory.
But I think it is wise to change the engine oil and filter within the first 1,000km.
As there is a bit of debris in the filter.

Same applies to diffs and transfer cases. Don't wait until 40 000km to change the oil. Change at 5000 or 10 000km. There will be a lot of wear metel from the gears wearing in.
