  • Bad fuel mileage after engine carbon clean.

Hi Guys, I just recently did a Engine carbon clean (one of those where the guy come with a van and cleans it for about an hr). My 2012 Kakadu has done 170K and thought this would be good. But since it been done, i am having very poor fuel mileage. It used to be low 8/100K in highway driving, now its like 10 to 11L/100K. I am not lead foot, stock vehicle and no mods. Always been serviced every 10K/log book at Toyota. So i am a bit lost of why this happened all of a sudden once this clean was done.

Also, can someone provide a step by step instruction to clean EGR & intake system. There are several conversations on it, but couldn't find the steps. Any help is appreciated.

    Cheers

I think I read quite a comprehensive DYI on this topic just recently. It had before and after pics as well.. not sure it was the same model

I had my V6 120 carbon cleaned twice by a colleague at work, he had great results with diesels but it made little difference to my petrol, but I did have terrible mileage after the second time, when I got home I disconnected the battery overnight and the next day it was fine we could only conclude that the ECU learned to expect the high 02 from his carbon cleaner (works by electrolyticaly splitting H2O to O and H and feeding through intake) as the new norm but after reset obviously had to relearn from scratch agian.
We did check values of all oxygen sensors before and after and and noted they definitely where very responsive after the second clean (we used two machines the second time as he was not convinced the first one was working correctly the first time).
So maybe a Soft ECU reset (battery disconnect overnite ) could help, however I do not know if this would reset a 150 Prado.

Try cleaning MAF sensor. When I had mine cleaned out I got worse economy for about 500-1000km and then it returned to normal. Not sure why this happened?

Thanks Gx-D4D for the link. So I took the car for few hundred KMs drive today. It sort off was coming back to old mileage reading but not consistent. I will try cleaning MAF sensor to start with and will let you guys know how it goes. The car is due for its 170k service. Maybe Toyota can reset electronically or something. I am still open for suggestions.

Carbon cleaning has no hope on cleaning the residue left behind on Diesel intakes. Physical interaction is the only way with that stuff. And anything on a Diesel or petrol that it does manage to clean then is going thru the engine... I wouldn't be doing it..

So what are they doing for a carbon clean ? Just spraying some crap in the air intake?

With the type of goo i pulled out of the intake, there is no way that anything sprayed down the intake is going too clean it.
i had it soaking over night in cleaner that melted the gloves of me and i still had to hit it with scrubbing brushes to clean it.

here's my write up if you want to have a look at what was in it.
It's a gx 2012 with 130k on the clock at the time i think.

Regarding the Carbon clean up, done through the inlet, before the EGR , on the D4D engines. What happens with all the crap going further into the combustion chamber? Does it get burnt? I wonder if the catalytic converter could get partially blocked? The reason I am asking is that after a while I had this done, the fuel consumption has gone up. And along with this, poor performance.
