  • Engine oil for 2.8

I know this has been discussed before but I would like to get your current thinking on the brand the price and the quantity of oil that you buy.
My dealer uses mobile 0w-30 but only sells it in 5 litre cans, the price is $77. They will supply larger quantity from the workshop but still want to charge at the same rate as for 5 litres. (no wonder some people call them stealerships)
Other stores have Penrite Enviro+ C2 0w-30 @ around $140 for 10 litres and $250 for 20 litres. the engine needs 7.5 litres so none of these will cope with an even number of changes without buying a smaller can to make up the difference.
So any advice please? I know that this is high tech stuff claiming protection for the dpf and catalyst but the price still almost breaks my heart as I have been used to buying a 209 litre drum of oil for marine and agricultural use in the UK for about 250 quid.

Hi Mate, for whats its worth my mechanic uses Penrite HPR diesel. It must be of a good quality as his shop is turning out some pretty highly tuned diesel 4wd's. Given that the DPF is a lawful requirement, and needs a specific oil, probably will keep oil prices high.
If you service yourself this particular oil can be purchased for around $490 for 60lts. That would be an even 8 oil changes. However is still pricy enough to feel like a kick in the bollocks.
Hope that is of some help to you mate.

Thanks for the prompt reply, I hadn't heard of Penrite HPR diesel before so I looked it up on the Penrite website. I am beginning to wish that I hadn't though after reading what is says about its application.
I need to tread carefully here because I don't want to contradict what you have been good enough to tell me or insinuate that your mechanic doesn't know what he is talking about but this is copied from the Penrite website giving information about HPR 0 fully synthetic 0w-30:

It is NOT recommended for use in diesels fitted with a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) that require an ACEA “C” grade Low-Mid SAPS (Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus & Sulphur) engine oil.

Hopefully I have misunderstood the type of oil you are talking about?

HPR Diesel is not the right oil. Will probably kill your DPF quicker that it would ordinarily die. Try Penrite C3 5w30 or Shell Helix C2/C3 0w30. If you buy 3 x 5L bottles you'll get two oil changes. Repco were flogging off Shell for $52 a bottle. I grabbed 6 so should be good for a while.

I know purchasing the right quality oil seems to be costly as a one-off exercise but for the overall distance covered between oil changes, the cost difference between the oils is a relatively small amount. For example, 10,000km between services, if fuel at 10L/100km and at $1.40 per litre, the fuel cost is $1,400. So the difference in oil cost pretty small in the comparison to that. I am more concerned about the quality of the oil.

gxl_d4d thanks for the link, several local Repco stores have the Shell oil in stock for $51.59 and as you suggest 3X5 litre cans will do 2 changes so that is the way I will go. The Repco website shows it as being correct for my rego and I have used Shell Helix Ultra before in engines with a dpf so I feel confident that this is probably the best value I can get.

watsea yes I couldn't agree more about the quality being correct and I do realise it would be an expensive mistake to cut corners but obviously I want to chose firstly the correct oil and secondly at the best price I can find. I am not used to buying oil in these small quantities, as I mentioned above about six months ago I had a barrel of universal 15w-40 and a barrel of 46 grade hydraulic oil delivered in the UK for the equivalent of $2.50 and $2.00 per litre.

Thanks to you all for helping.

We buy bulk oil in multiple 1,000 litre cubes to resell to our dealers and the correct spec oil for our current model engines still costs nearly $6/litre so reselling at $10 litre gives a GP of 40%, sounds a lot but realistically where a business needs to be to be profitable.
As already posted IMO your better off getting the most suitable low ash oil available.

FYI our "smallest" engines take 60 litres per change

I don't feel quite so ripped off now after reading how much 1000 litres costs and to be fair the oil price I quoted is for engines (and gearboxes) in tractors that usually don't even have a turbo let alone a catalyst or dpf. You must service some big engines if they hold from 60 litre upwards, my boat engine is a 430 Hp Cummins which holds about 25 litres and I thought that was a lot, the oil filter on this engine is pretty big and costs a fortune. The service intervals on these engines is counted in hours run, not like Toyota in time elapsed (6 months) from the last change regardless of whether the engine has been used or not.

Sorry JohnLynn, I did bum steer you mate. I spoke with my mechanic today and he only uses that Penrite HPR diesel in his pre DPF Diesels and “off road only” race cars. I did happen to ask him about oil after talking to him about his diesel race car. So my mistake.
he has assured me that is not what he is using in my Prado.
sorry to all for having my wires crossed.
Also thanks for being so diplomatic in your response, I appreciate it.

Phew that is good news as it must have been a concern for you thinking you could possibly have the wrong oil if it does really clog the dpf as much as people say. I thought it may have been a misunderstanding possibly by me, so glad we have got to the bottom of it.
As for being diplomatic I originally asked the question because I did not know what to use so the last thing I wanted to do was tell someone who had taken the trouble to reply that they were wrong.
This is such a helpful and friendly forum, there are plenty of forums particularly electrical ones where you see posts like "I have 40 years experience so I cant possibly be wrong" or "you should not be attempting this if you don't know what you are doing" it is "illegal to even put a plug on a wire" etc etc. lol

I glad we got to the bottom of it too....I couldn’t wait to call my mechanic this morning. Your dead right about other forums being negative too, some are cut throat. I try to make my posts as if I had the person standing in front of me face to face.
also you stop learning when you take the attitude of “I know everything.” Hopefully nobody ran out and bought $500 worth of oil because of me.

JohnLynn 430hp Cummins sounds like a QSB6.7 so relatively small We top out at 2000 hp at this stage Yes looking at the service requirements of some bigger diesels makes our Prado service costs minor in comparison.

And low ash oil definitely makes a difference.

Ive been getting the Penrite 0w-30 from Repco when it is on sale. As they have 30% deals often it works out ok.

Any oil with specifications beginning with ACEA is non DPF compatible. Only oils with C1, C2, C3 or C4 are DPF compatible oils. Sadly, the C rated oils are more expensive compared to the older oils.

ACEA is the governing body that follows the “C” rating. C ranges from C1-C5. C ratings dictate your high temp/high shear figures (ht/hs) and SAPS (sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur content and TBN (total base number).

                              Good information here:
                              https://www.penriteoil.com.au/knowle...ifications/364

I personally run enviro+ 5w-40C3 full syn but it also meets C2 rating requirements. I dont like running thin oil in diesels due to the high combustion pressures that bearings need to cope with.
