  • D4D glow plugs

How often should they be replaced?
Conflicting info in the net, reckon most cars would still be running on the originals.
    I know mine is, 200,000k.

Absolutely no idea as regard a D4D but in my experience with other vehicles I would suggest that they do not need to be changed until they stop functioning. On most engines they can be easily checked with a meter for continuity if you can be bothered to separate the wire joining them together in order to test them individually.

Trouble is , the older they are the more carbon builds up.
When it’s time to remove them, they’ve become welded to the head.
      Think I might investigate.

Yes you are right, I have heard horror stories of the 3.0 engine in an Isuzu Trooper, (Holden Jackaroo here?) snapping off. This meant the head needing to be removed and sent off to engine re-builders all at the customer's expense despite a garage ringing them off in the first place. Having said that Peugeot models didn't seem to suffer the same problem and would undo fairly easily.

1KD glow plugs don't seem to suffer the same as the 1KZ ones, they need to be replaced around every 100,000km as the tips break and can damage pistons and the turbo. The tips are ceramic and the heat cycling eventually fractures them.

Rang my local Toyota workshop, they don’t touch them unless there’s some reason, not testing correctly etc.
They had the fear as every time they removed one, it invariably turned into a head off job.
Spare parts didn’t even have any stock, had to come up from Melbourne.
