  • Turbo Failure at 110k

Hey all - thought I would share my recent experience with my turbo failing this week. All fixed now, however I still have some unanswered questions before I can square this away as just bad luck.

Car is a 12/2014 D4D, has done 110,000km and was serviced 3 days prior. Was driving along and suddenly lost power (limp mode) and check engine light and traction control lights came on. SGII was showing a P0046 code. I cleared the code but it simply came back immediately. I was luckily only around the corner from home so managed to limp the car home and park it up while I reached out to the mechanic. Two days later I was able to start it up and nurse it over to the mechanic - no error code however I was driving very gently. On this short trip however, I did notice a siren type sound.

For background, other than regular log book servicing (by Toyota until 60,000 and elsewhere since), the car did get a full off car EGR clean and mild tune at 100,000km (ECU remap) incl catch can, EGR programmed closed and replaced glow plugs. Also has a safari snorkel since new and 2 3/4 Beaudesert exhaust since 70,000km.

Diagnoses (including a second and third opinion) was that the turbo electrics and/or stepper motor where the cause, and I opted to replace the whole turbo as we couldn't be sure of the extent of the damage and I didn't want to risk any reliability on future remote trips.

My concern was that this could have been a symptom of acute injector failure causing oil starvation to the turbo. Mechanic confirmed however that the oil sump pick up was clear, as were the oil hoses/pipes to the turbo. Can probably rule this out then - will look to do injectors at 120k anyway.

I was also concerned that the EGR being permanent closed via the ECU reprogram may have caused a problem in the system (boost relief when coming off the accelerator quickly...?) - mechanics didn't think so.

So at this stage, it appears I was just unlucky (or rather lucky it happened so close to home...)

Happy for any thoughts, queries or similar experiences.

I have a 2014 model also and had seals go on the turbo at 80,000km, but no limp mode or anything.

    good luck.

Unfortunately the Toyota “mechanics” aren’t too skilled when it comes turbos. Better to take her to a turbo expert.
Mine had a slight oil weep at around 30,000k. Toyota diagnosis, needs new turbo.
My diagnosis, a bit of blow by finding its way via the vent pipe.
Car is now at 220,000k and still on that original turbo.
When you get the ecu remapped/flashed, it will have the boost slightly increased. The variable vanes will be working harder and perhaps in regions that have built up carbon deposits. They usually sound a bit different after the remap, but not a siren.

we have seen a few turbo vanes slightly bent lately , the only common issue has been the remap , we have a theory that the vanes are snapping back hard when off boost causing this failure

Thanks for responses all. I actually kept the turbo and have contacted a few turbo experts in Brisbane to see whether they would like to take it to recon and let me know exactly went wrong. At this stage the indication remains electrical/actuator with the stepper motor (I cant see anything wrong with it just looking and playing with it, but I am far from an expert...)

steeper motors do play up but usually because the vanes are sticking , the turbo guys will know when they dismantle , you can see it clearly
