  • Dead 150 Prado donk

Hey guys, I have a 2014 150 with 147 000km. Had the intakes cleaned and catch can fitted at 137 K when I had a leaking common rail pipe. Replaced that and on Saturday it developed a miss and is blowing smoke. No engine lights or any noise, just smoke and a miss.
Mechanic said an injector had gone and replaced them but now there is also a hole in a piston. Mechanic is looking at 2nd hand Hiace motor (reckons they are better than Prado motor?) or rebuild? Do they even go in? I can get a late model (2018) and you have to change over the timing chain cover. Has anyone here done this??
What's the best way to go? Obviously depends on cost but I am thinking rebuild is better than maybe someone else's problem. Is this anything to do with the dpf problem?

Just read that my Prado being a 14 model is not affected by the dpf issues

All too often sourcing an engine from a different model ends up with a lot of unforeseen installation problems. “Simple” things like alternator location, radiator piping, etc so I would suggest rebuilding as a first preference.
The issue is that the injectors fail and quickly destroy a piston not so much the piston failed of its own accord. Do a search for more information and preventative measures for future reference.

Rebuild, then you know it will last, have the latest version pistons fitted.
Always the question, did it need injectors? At those k’s it would have been worth a check.
But what came first, crook injector or crook piston.
Useless after the event since even brand new injectors will give incorrect feedback if your cylinder pressure is down, as in a cracked piston.

I'll be interested in which way you go. I'm looking at a full rebuild (but for different reasons) as well. Interested also in Carco's comment on latest version pistons. I was told by my mechanic a few years back that injectors should be replaced at 120,000 re the piston holing problem. Seems like there was some truth in this.

no real figure for replacing the injectors you just need to keep an eye on the feedback figures and react on them. My first set had 180,000k on them and were still well within spec, 2nd set only lasted 50,000k before they went out. So depends on a lot of things but if you keep an eye on them then they last as long as they last. They are not a cheap item to replace just for the sake of it.

And remember, feedback figures are useless if she is down on compression due to a cracked piston.
Has taken a long time but mechanics are starting to realise, feedback figures from a blown engine mean absolutely nothing if the piston went first.
Lawry’s post is the classic, replace injectors only to then find it was a piston problem.
Makes you wonder how many perfectly good injectors are similarly replaced.

When the mechanics are replacing the injectors are they replacing the pipes as well. If not it seems to me like they’re only 3/4 doing the job & I wouldn’t be surprised if “original” pipes were leading to some cases of a premature decline in injector performance after injectors are replaced. Maybe mechanics treat them like the ATF where they’ll tell you it never needs replacing, but anyone who checks the ATF after say 200,000km knows that theory is BS.
