  • 1GD-FTV 2.8L Eng Oil experiences

    Hi All,

I'm about to change from warranty to DIY servicing on my 2017 GXL. Appears there's now quite a few choices for oil, eg:

    Penrite Enviro+ C2 Engine Oil 0W-30
    Castrol EDGE 0W-30 C2
    Nulon 0W-30 C2
    Valvoline SynPower ENV C2 0W-30

    (all full synthetics I believe)

I would really like to hear people's experiences using these oils (or others). Would be good to know if you've noticed any difference. Particularly if you've seen the oil light remain on longer or experience more rattling on cold start up.

    Thanks,
    PJ

Due to the hot climate in most of Australia you could consider using a slightly heavier grade of oil.

Penrite have a full synthetic 5W-40 grade oil that's C2 spec & suitable for use in the 1GD engines.

I've used this for around 12 months now with no problems, the car runs just the same as with the C2 0W-30 I used until this became available.

Thought I'd just give you a bit more choice!!

      Cheers Geo.

And what oils would they be exactly ?

(Sorry, I mean what 0W-30 C2 did you use before 5W-40 C2 became available)

I really don't think that the brand matters, as long as it's a full synthetic oil & is blended to the correct C2 spec.

Yeah, agree I think any of the oils I originally mentioned should work fine too. Some will be better than others as no two will have the same ingredients/additives - but maybe the differences will be too small to notice.

I'd probably consider going up from 0W to 5 or maybe even 10W. I'll be leaving the operating temp viscosity at 30 however as my understanding is that this shouldn't change much with ambient temps, it's the OEM spec & it's design related.

No one else dropping their own oil on a 1GD ?

Yes I do in my 2015 Gxl but I cant remember what I used and cant check as I am stuck in the UK because of covid. I know that what I have written so far is no help whatsoever but I can remember there is a thread on here about the newer Prados having issues in very hot conditions and when working hard which was caused by the oil being too thin. I think the answer was to use a higher viscosity oil as suggested above. Surely a 0W-30 is more suited to somewhere with cold temperatures rather than Australia?

Shell Helix 0w30 C2/C3 did the job for me but repco don't stock it any more. I've used Shell Helix 5w30 C3 as well without issue. 5w30 didn't burn off as much between changes. Just buy what ever C3 oil comes on sale. C3 can be used where C2 is specified. Some oils carry both specs. If you're burning lots of oil between changes, try 5w40 C3 rated.

I've decided to go with Caltex Havoline ProDS F SAE 0W-30 (it's a C2) in conjunction with Ryco (Z418) filter for the moment. My head is hurting from the comparisons and different manufacturers publish different specs which doesn't help !

Got the Caltex for ~$8.50/L from Repco which seemed pretty reasonable compared with ~$14 for Penrite Enviro and north of $15/L for Toyota.

Will consider upping viscosity when engine gets some more K's on it - it's only done 33,000.

Isn't C2 required for the DPF? I thought that C3 was not low enough in ash for DPF health,

According to what I'd read, C2 and C3 have the same chemical limits so equivalent in terms of DPF. The difference is C2 gives better fuel economy but C3 gives better wear protection. The difference in fuel economy isn't much, 2 - 3 percent.
