I'm new here and new to a 2018 Prado Kakadu. Some of my 4wd mates recommend the installation of both an oil catch can and a water seperating fuel filter. Another has done 280k in a 120 series diesel with significant outback driving without either of these and hasn't had a problem. How necessary are either of these, particularly given the car seems to have a perfectly good sedimenting and water seperating fuel filter installed as standard. There also appears to be very little room to fit them!

I've lived without them for many years and many remote tracks. Do preventative maintenance according to usage and carry a spare.
An oil catch can seems to ensure that your EGR valve and intake manifold carbonise up dry instead of oily.
There will come a time when the EGR circuit will need to be cleaned with or without a catch can.
The carbon comes from soot in the recirculated exhausted gasses splattering on discontinuities in the circuit.
Also those accessories are not on Toyota's planned maintenance schedule so it will be up to you to maintain them and carry spares.
