  • New DPF

New DPF fitted. About 60000km dpf which has been monitored by a Scan Guage2 for 50000+km changed its behaviour . It was burning at around 270 km and going to 4% as is common but lately under the same conditions was only going to 6 or 8% BUT started going up at 1% per km to 48% at 48 km and staying there for quite a while before burning at 275km as usual.
Very odd. I took it into the dealer who said it sounds like it was on the way out. A week later a new one was fitted under the new 10 year warranty for dpfs.

A few issues getting the old one off due to stuck studs. Next problem was the ecu didn't like the new codes but the issue was resolved. 2016 GX. Despite the new dpf codes for the new software the Scan Guage is still reading the dpf % full as before. Apparently it is a new design with a totally different set up around the 5th injector.

Moral: any issues with your dpf see a dealer and get it replaced under the 10 year warranty with the latest version. I am told that any post 2019 or so will have the latest technology.

My 2016 GX's DPF failed big-time at around 90,000km in November 2020. At the time, I was told that the 5th injector, the injector housing and DPF were all replaced. The new housing is supposed to allow better circulation of exhaust gases, keeping the injector cleaner. The new DPF was said to be "a new design" that handles burns better. As you'd expect, soot accumulation varies according to how hard the engine is working - when towing, burns occur more often. As far as I know there was nothing more than a firmware change (if at all) for the ECU - there was no change to any of the associated PIDs.

I documented my experiences here: DPF Accumulation Runaway - Toyota Prado How To's, Technical Information & Reviews (pradopoint.com.au)

I've logged all DPF burns since new. The ECU firmware update (circa 2019) displays a complex algorithm calculating the accumulation %.

When driving at highway speeds DPF burns occur anywhere around 150Km of travel.
Around town or on slow tracks DPF burns can occur anywhere after 250-350Kms.
When the burn stops, usually around 8%, it will coast down to 6% with the residual heat (I surmise).
At times it can keep declining to 4, 2 and even 0% depending. This seems to happen when driving slowly and the residual heat lingers.

The accumulation % grows quickly to anywhere around 40 - 70% depending. When driving around town or tracks the accumulation % growth then hits the skids and can decline (be recalculated) substantially. I've seen it decline from 70-80% down to less than 50%, then increase very slowly to 100% after approximately 250-350Kms.
If driving at highway speeds the accumulation rate doesn't decline but continues to 100% (after anywhere around 150Kms).
The algorithm seems to assume you are driving at highway speeds until it determines otherwise. It eventually recognises that you aren't and readjusts the % down.

The burn temperature also follows an algorithmic path. It normally tops out at around 650-660C. But I have seen it go past 700C on a handful of occasions.
      Aluminium melts at 660C!

I'll publish my "DPF Statistics 0-120,000km" in the next couple of months.
You can find the previous data on Pradopoint at "DPF Statistics 0-100,000Km".
