  • 1GD engine oil

    Hi everyone.
I know I probably won’t get a science based answer on this, but I thought it could be an interesting discussion.
My owners manual recommends 0w20 for my 2021 prado and states that a higher viscosity may be beneficial if the engine is run in extreme load situations.
The only other oils specified in the book are 0w30 and 5w30.
I regularly tow a 2 ton van at the speed limit and sand 4x4 in some pretty soft areas. What’s peoples thoughts on getting a thicker oil put in at the 20k service or is 0w20 fine.
I live in Adelaide and our summers here are in the 40’s so a lot of my towing is in above 30 degree weather. Personally I’m leaning towards a 5w30 mainly because I’m old fashioned but the 0w20 actually has better sheer capabilities but obviously starts as a thinner oil.
Keen to hear opinions, especially if you have actual knowledge on the subject, not just “thicker is better”.
    Cheers

The shear capability is the same for C5 (0W-20) and C2 (5W-30) oils that Toyota specifies.
I wouldn't choose to use 0W-20 in Oz. It's the recommended oil because it might give better economy.
Using 5W-30 should be the default for Oz, IMHO given the high ambient temps and extended drive times (distances). If you want slightly better shear rating then a C3 oil (still 5W-30) is the go, although not recommended by Toyota (fuel economy?). The only difference between an ACEA C2 and C3 oil is the shear strength.

C2 because of DPF and ash levels for 1GD?

Anyone know why they dropped it from 0w30 in the early models to 0w20 in the later ones?
My new work hiace is still 0w30!
