turbo started to whistle, new noise.

hey crew,

2015 Prado 2.8l diesel 83000kms auto

so i have owned it for 6 months and it is my first diesel vehicle. is has started whistling when driving and accelerating. it sounds like the turbo kicking in but it wasnt there before.
any time i accelerate the noise is there from about the 2500rpm. no noticeable noise when cruising at all speeds.
the noise is not present if i just rev the car while parked and like wise if i put it in Neutral and rev it, so ie accelerating to 60km/h @3000rpm the noise is audible but if i go to neutral and rev it the is no noise.

any advise would be appreciated.

is it the turbo?
is it an exhaust or inlet leak?
is the stereo too quite

Any power drop? Check for split/ loose boost hoses to start.

May be worth also checking turbo if nothing else presents itself.

Scan or ultra gauge to monitor boost levels and compare what you see to what they say it should have on Toyota documents, which will also indicate a boost leak.

At that low a KMs you may be lucky and get toyota to offer some help if its a turbo gone.

With any of my turbo vehicles, an exhaust flange leak sounds like a reed instrument, definitely not the normal turbo whistle.
A buggered turbo making the siren noise, well that’s very obvious.
You won’t make enough exhaust pressure to spool up the turbo when simply free revving, engine has to be under load.
I’d do a check of the air filter, have seen them sucked inside out from poor maintenance.
Then check boost pipework, as best you can. Some are hard to get at.
The one that killed my turbo was the MAP signal filter. They can develop a crack with engine heat/age. Then the MAP sensor won’t read correct manifold pressure, tells the VVT to keep boosting resulting in overboost.
This is so common my turbo man refuses to refit those little filters.

Thanks for this. I've been chasing an intermittent whistle (reed sound as you put it) ever since my engine was replaced. Only occurs when cold and intermittently. Will check these items.

Reed sound is usually turbo to manifold gasket. Remove heat shields and check how tight the bolts are. Look for tell tale signs of soot.

so the turbo is rooted,
as suggested here, the noise is likely a boost leak.
so did the turbo fail and damage a hose or the cooler causing the leak or the other way around?
i have been told that a leak can cause the turbo to overboost, and that can cause the turbo shaft to move and fins can touch the housing. either way i have to change the turbo and hope that the leak isnt the intercooler

You can have a mechanic do a smoke test to see if there is any leaks. Will pinpoint them easily. (Engine needs to be all together obviously for this.)

replaced the turbo. noise is gone just like my dollars.

good news is i have a toyota turbo that needs a rebuild for sale now

no noticeable loss of power at all
