You'll get a higher reading on the dipstick if you leave it overnight to drain down.
Thanks for the info. Changed my oil today and this method is spot on.

I went for the $15 supercheap filter wrench and it worked like a dream !

Is it common for people to change every 5k with the 150's? My current diesel has a 15k service interval however I change the oil and filter every 7.5k.

I do mine at 5000kms and the filter. The workshop does the 10000km services and stamps the book. I do the engine bay fuel filter every 10000km myself.

Back in 1979 I did a service on my shiny TD Gemini....in my haste and inexperience I accidentally removed the gear box drain plug instead of the engine sump plug (they are quite close together)....luckily the gear oil has a distinctive smell about it...well no harm done, and the Gemini got an early gear box oil change, but I won't ever fall for the potentially costly mistake of removing the wrong drain plug again. Anyway...I found the sump plug after I removed the small oval "inspection" plate in the underbody sump guard (two 12mm bolts), this exposed the 14mm sump plug. Drained the sump first, then loosened the oil filer (to avoid spillage)...the oil filter is virtually upright and the toyota special service tool used to remove the oil filter makes it quite easy to remove....I used a socket wrench with an extension (but no socket as the extension fits directly into the oil filter removal tool). So far I have used 6.5 litres of oil to getto the mark on the dip stick, but will run the engine and then let it cool and check again in the morning....anyway, all good...like others I have changed oil and filters many times on other cars, but never on a Prado.....I virtually needed a step ladder to reach into the engine bay, and I didn't need to jack up the front of the car or use ramps or pit, I just crawled right under...( when I eventually lift the suspension we will virtually be able to camp under the car and forget the camper...oh the clearance...
Spoke with Toyota Dealer....no problems with warranty provided I use all correct parts and oils ( I checked and double checked oil and filter...they suggested I keep receipts to prove the filter and oil was correct)...however, as one would expect to be the case, they said should the oil leak out through an incorrectly fitted sump plug or oil filter, and if I then damage the motor, then this is not covered under warranty. I will be checking both the filter and the sump plug for leaks in the morning and again after a drive..as usual after any service. BTW, the old oil was as black as charcoal...I know, its my first diesel, and diesels are supposed to have oil that goes black quickly, and black oil does not necessarily mean its old and useless oil...but anyway, I'm going to try and do the oil/filter change every 5,000km.
Just one little question .... WHY???? Toyota service schedule is every 10,000km. Surely they know the requirements of the engine.

Good question, but honestly, 10,000km is just too many km between oil changes for the 4cyl turbo diesel injected engine. We want to keep it for many years...and some very experienced diesel mechanics haveadvised do the change at 5,00okm...its easy, no drama, and it may well prolong the engine life...we'll see

In 2006 when I was buying my first 4WD, Nissan told me "10k services, used to be every 5k but we're much better now & every 10K is the way to go"
Then Toyota told me " service every 5K, others (Nissan) might say 10K but it's not enough. Always change your oil & filter every 5K"

                      I went Toyota, but to a V6.

I now have a D4D and have and always will change the oil & filter every 5K. Especially while there's any chance that I may re-lease & then buy it out to keep for a while. (Due mainly to the $ amount in extras on this vehicle). Hope this helps

at 5K just dump the oil, replace it with full synthetic 5w-40 have the filter changed at the 10k interval with toyota or do it your self, I'm a diesel mechanic that works on Toyota (and lots of them) there recommendation for servere service is what I just described, we follow that and have never had any issues other than people telling us how good there vehicles drive.

What brand/type of 5w 40 fully synthetic oil would you use?

Why bother changing the oil if you're not going to do the filter too...

Just used delo400... No point going over the top if you're doing it every 5k.
It'll cost you ~$12 in filter and ~$30 in oil.

                              Isn't DELO 400 a 15w 40?

I wanted to use a 5w 40 grade of oil if possible, and am interested in what "paul's150" was using, as he mentioned a fully synthetic 5w 40 oil.
Toyota recommend a 5w 30 grade, but in Queensland summer temperatures the wider 5w 40 may provide better protection at high temps, with better oil flow at start up and when cold with the 5W grade rather than a 15W...
