Mobil make a good 5w40 called mobil 1 delvac esp (full syn) 5w40. I was going to use this but figgered doing oil/filter changes at 5k i just use mobil delvax esp 15w40 with a genuine filter.

Its not just about oil longevity, its also about oil viscosity. A 15W 40 doesn't have quite as good viscosity at lower temperatures, and whilst changing the oil and filter regularly will ensure the oil is clean and will help ensure sludge does not build up etc, the 15W 40 doesn't have good viscosity at the lower end of the temp range and hence is thicker at emgine start up, and also thicker in coller temperatures which can reduce oil flow to the top parts of the engine. Toyota recommend a 5W 30 viscosity oil, but in Queensland an oil with a higher value to better cope with higher temerpaturs can be a betetr way to go. The only way to get a 5W 40 oil seems to be with a synthetic grade oil, and unfortnately that costs more money. ANyway, a 5w 40 viscoisty oil that is definately suitable for a diesel and meets or exceedes they recomemended grade of oil may be a good way to go if you want to achieve a long engine life...perhaps? Thoughts/comments?

Isn't the greatest amount of engine wear happens at startup before oil get splashed around? using thicker oil may prevent this but it means higher fuel consumption. i think the Toyo manual recommends 5w30 to achieve the 8.5 ltr/100 it claims. (this is off the top of my head). it seems like a trade off.

Penrite make HPR5 Diesel, 5W-40 semi syn blend....

Toyota Genuine Oil is just rebadged Caltex Delo 400. The Toyota fellas tell me the V8's in the 200's are burning the 15w-40 and as such they've moved to a 10w-30 full syn blend.

My last change was on the road so I dropped in at a Toyota dealer and picked up a filter + plug washer and Supercrap for a 10L drum of HPR15...back home will be via a 20L drum of Delo 400....

Using a higher viscosity oil like 5/40 or 10/40 rather than the toyota recommended 5/30 shouldn't be needed even here in Queensland. Remember the engine cooling system is designed to control high temperatures. What it can't control is low temperature. If I was seeing my temp gauge rise above normal for prolonged periods and I knew the cooling system was in perfect order then maybe I would consider a 40 grade. However after owning 4 Japanese 4x4s and doing significant towing and touring ,none has ever looked like going above normal operating temp. 5w/30 synthetic and 10,000k services (approx every 3 months) works for me.

Thoughts/comments: You live at the Sunny coast not in the middle of Siberia.....I seriously doubt that the oil in your vehicle will get as low as 10deg......let alone the -20 that you would need for inadequate protection from a 15w40.....far more engine wear will be caused by revving a cold engine.

Thinner oils evapourate more readily so more oil will end up in the intake and cause fouling from the EGR system.

So I head off to get some oil today to do the interval oil change in my new 150 diesel prado, I know the book tells you every 10k is fine but I want to change the oil and filter at 5k for my own piece of mind and to get to know my new rig better as well and the bloke at supercheap stops me on the way out and throws a curve ball telling me I have the wrong oil, I had a 15w-40 Diesel engine oil and he starts going on about particulate filters and tells me I need to use specific oil or my motor will go bang!

Was he attempting an upsell or do the 2012 prado's require this specific oil?

                  Cheers

Firstly Kev it would be good to know your exact make/model, and you will notice that many folk have that information in their "signature" at the bottom of their posted questions, so everyone is clear about what car, make, model version etc they are referring to.

Secondly Kev, the best place to start looking is always in your the vehicle owners manual, under the oil section and it will detail your oil specifications.

Thirdly Kev, you can search any number of on line lubrication guides eg
                    http://www.datateck.com.au/lube/CastrolAusMobile/
and you type in your specifc vehicle details and it will show you the recommended lubrication.

It would seem that the following vehicle doesn't have a "DPF" Diesel particulate filter, in which case the salesman may have been mistaken, but you need to double check because if you get it wrong you could have engine trouble.

                    Land Cruiser Prado, 3.0 Litre 1KD-FTV T/Diesel, 4x4 (2009-2012)

I also do oil changes every 5,000km between dealership services. In the end, to avoid any confusion or any warranty issues I decided to just get my oil from the Toyota spare parts when I also pick up the genuine filter and a sump plug washer. Unfortunately you need 7 litres abnd you have to purchase two 5 litre containers. At least I have it on record on the tax invoice so I can prove what I have used in the engine should there ever be a question raised about what oil has been used. After the warranty runs out I will source oil elsewhere like you are doing, but I won't rely on advice from a supercheap salesman

It will also pay to get hold of the toyota Special Service Tool to help remove the oil filter. Its basically an oversized socket that fits a standard socket spanner, and it makes it very easy to remove the oil filter. From memory it cost about $20 but is quite handy.

I remove the sump guard inspection plate, remove the sump plug and drain the sump. While that is draining I pour a cup full (or more) of fresh oil into the new oil filter to "prime" the element with new oil and also wipe oil onto the oil filter "O" ring. I then remove the old oil filter using the toyota Special Service Tool, and usually by then the sump has drained. The new oil in the new filter has then soaked into the element by now, and I just tip it upside down and install the new oil filter (and because the new oil has had some time to soak into the oil filter element it doesn't make a mess when you tip it upside down to install it), and I then tighten the new oil filter according to the instructions on the oil filter.

Anyway, good luck, but be very careful to use the correct oil.

Mate, I went through the same process scratching my head with regards to dpf's. reading the book and also ringing HPR oil Australia customer service hotline, I confirmed my 2012 D4D manual gxl prado does not have a dpf.

I have been doing my own oil and filter service in between Toyota service's now for the last 30000k's without any dramas.

Just to add, I always use HPR diesel 5. In my research, i find it to be the best quality oil available. Typically around $90 - $99 for 10L.

Penrite HPR Diesal 5 (5w-40) seems like a very good option, and I think I will use this once out of warranty.

Follow the link to the Penrite website, and it recommends Penrite HPR 5 for the diesel Prado.

                        Land Cruiser Prado, 3.0 Litre 1KD-FTV T/Diesel, 4x4 (2009-2012)
Semi-synthetic high performance engine oil for use in the modern generation of high performance diesel engines including turbocharged. Ideal where this viscosity or SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 is recommended. Primary recommendation for Land Rover Td5, Ford, Mazda, Mercedes and Holden Jackaroo 3.0L diesel engines and those fitted with hydraulically controlled fuel injectors. Vehicles fitted with DPFs may need to use Enviro+ or Diesel HD as appropriate.

Autobarn has Penrite HPR Diesel 5 5W40 in 10lt for $79.99 in the catalogue in SA at least. The discussion above was really good with a vehicle coming off lease in a month.

What oil usage do most of you have between 10000km services. I have used about 1.5lt in my first 4500km Nov 2012 Kakadu diesel and questioned this with the Toyota service. They told me that a lighter oil is used in the factory and that after the first service it will have a heavier oil used and thus will not use as much. what does everyone think and use.
