  • Slight crunch noise entering low range

Hi all, anyone get a slight crunching noise as the transmission goes into low range? Is this normal?

Come to a stop then give it a good shove. Don't worry too much if it's only a slight crunch.

        Cheers

Yeah, I get that too. I have put it down to the gears meshing and thought no more of it.

There is no synchromesh on the transfer case gears so some noise is likely. Slight crunching noise maybe ok. Try engaging low range from a complete stop (as suggested) a few times and see if it always happens. You could try putting the gearbox in neutral to take any drive loads off rather than rely on the clutch (manual) or the the torque converter.

Isn't this standard practice in an auto?

Yes, in neutral with brakes applied to shift into low.

In my previous 03 120 I could shift into LR from neutral or park with no noise at all. In my current 09 120 I can only shift into LR with no noise if I'm in Park with my foot on the brake. It can not be done from neutral without some serious grinding noises. I can get away with it sometimes if the vehicle is dead cold, but once it's hot ... no chance. I thought it was only an issue with the 120's.

Thanks guys. I always engage low range when fully stopped and the 150 won't engage low range unless the auto is in neutral. It's only a very slight noise that is probably fine. In for the 20,000km service this week so will raise it with the service guys.

                    Cheers, Sam.
