    An electrical fire gets hold very quickly, fire extinguisher will not stop it, disconnecting the battery will but only in the first few seconds, so unless you have the bonnet up and wire cutters in your hand when it starts, you will be too late. How many duel batter installations have fuseable links on the cables, does yours?

      I can't stand Bear Grylls but what an Incredibly simple solution that alot of people wouldn't think of, especially in a panic.

          For what its worth I drove at least 80km (maybe up to 3,000km at speeds of 100kph with diesel on my turbo and dump pipe. No fire, thank you sweet Jesus. (This was rently. Thanks to THYSWYUP for identifying the problem.

            and that's why you can have a smoke, talk on the phone while lighting a campfire with your vehicle still running when filling up with diesel :P

              I wonder if it had an electronic rust protection dvice fitted....maybe that started the fire?

                  Very scary thought! In the heat of the moment (pun intended) you might not think to just unlock the car manually, like in the old days.

                  I doubt that you could get locked in the car, even if the car did lock itself as mentioned. If you lock the car, the drivers side automatically unlocks when opening from the inside handle. This is a mechanical action inside the door, not electrical. But.....

                  To try this, lock your wife in the car, disconnect battery and see if she can get out. If she can't, grab a beer and enjoy some peace and quiet for a while!

                    Brings back memories of my experience in my current 120 V6. Petrol pumped all over a hot motor from a dislodged fuel filter line. Just after it was serviced at the dealership where the filter was replaced during the service. Fuel dripping off engine and bonnet insulation with a puddle under the Prado and a 150 + mtr trail of fuel behind it. Unbeliablly no fire. Bought a lotto ticket the next day.

                              When a vehicle catches on fire, the best thing to do is get as quickly as possible, because the plastics, vinyls, chemicals ignite quickly, and then produce heat and flame to re-intensify what is already burning. 5 - 10 seconds might be all it needs for the interior to catch fire.

                              A friend of a friend bought a new Porsche 911 some years ago from a city dealer, drove it home to the country that night and all lights failed as he was driving around a corner. Resulted in one Porsche write-off as it rolled over and over.
