  • Toyota Service: 40,000km - Been advised car is required over night?

I put my Prado 150 Diesel in for its 40,000km service at my local dealership. I just received a call asking if I am happy if I can leave them the car overnight so they can do a cold start to hear / inspect the tappets? This apparently is part of the sercice schedule, which I thought is weird being that nearly every Prado out there is a Diesel and it wasn’t mentioned at the time of booking the car in. They advised me that the 40K service is big service (5hrs +), and they need the car to be stone cold to do this particular inspection.

Has anyone else been told this before? Or are they just wanting more time to complete a regular service?

    Cheers

    Tez

If the clearances are checked when cold then Toyota is spot on. Sounds like a committed service team to me.

they are right with the cold clearance check, hopefully they remove the tappet cover and check clearances with feeler gauges and not by listening to the engine running, these new engines need to be spot on, hope you have capped price servicing 40,000km service would have cost me over $400 i only paid $210

I've seen the 40,000km, 80,000km, 120,000 service cost anywhere from $500 to $900 depending on the dealership you go to, which makes the fixed price servicing quite attractive at 40,000km

Thanks for this guys I had my 150 in for its 40,000 service today and asked about the service item Toyota describe as "Inspect valve clearances". Toyota in Phillip in the ACT hesitated then advised that they use a "sensory method"... sounds like a line from Crocodile Dundee... but they advised if I would like it done I would need to leave the vehicle overnight...they did however sign off on the 40k service and charge me for it though. Makes me nervous about what else wasnt done.

Hi all great thread, I too... (well my Prado that is) is also getting close to the 40,000 km service so good information to be armed with when talking to my friendly service man.
                  Cheers

                        FYI,
Had my 40,000km service done (150 GXL D4D auto). Dropped it off the afternoon prior so that the engine is cool enough so the tappetts could be checked per the service schedule (apparently though, all they do is listen for excess noise), but to be done correctly the engine must be cool. Picked up at lunch time on the day of the service. Capped price service, but there is always the usual request ..."you need a wheel alignment and balance Sir" (typically 40-60$ extra), even though the alignment figures before and after the alignment show an undetectable difference, and all was well within limits...and then the usual answere to my question "what oil will you use?"...and the reply is always different depending on who you ask, (service manager, service desk person, mechanic, etc) and once the service is completed, it is never specified on the service report what oil was used, so I always ask "what oil was used?" and the same cagey resposnes, "I'll check"....and yet again, something different to what was said only hours before when the car was dropped off....other answesr over the past 12 months have been ."we use castrol", "we use caltex", "we use toyota oil" "we use mobil oil", and finally "whatever we can get cheapest"...so yet again....I have no idea of what oil is being used in my vehicle...and if you supply your own oil for use at the service, its the same fixed price for the service.....probably the single most important part to the regular service of a car under warranty (engine oil and oil filter), and still, after 12 months, I have absolutley no clear idea of exactly what oil is being used in my diesel prado....its not good enough! The potential for an "oil subsitiution" ripoff is significant, whereby cheap engine oil is used and the customer is charged for expensive oil. Seriously, if there is no oil subsitiution taking place, then everyone...and I mean everyone at the dealers I have used, are very ignorant, very easily confused or simply don't care about what oil is actually used ...try for yourself....ask the service manager, the service desk person, the spare parts manager of the actualy mechanic who is walking about with your car keys and see if you get the same answer from all of them about what oil they use.....I will be surprised if you get the same response from people who should actually know.....

Put mine in for it's 40K service last week.

Changed my service centre because my usual didn't want the car overnight. Wrong answer.

Glad I did as one of the valve clearances was out of spec. Also got the new tail shaft installed at the same time without any argument.

In the toyota service schedule it says "Check valve clearance using a thickness gauge and adjust clearances if necessary (adjustment requires additional time).

This should be done with the engine cold, and then checked when the engine is at operating teperature, and the vehicle should therefore be left overnight. Its bullshit when they say they just do an "audible" test.

Well, if they do check the valve clearances I want to know how they do it, because one thing is for sure, where I go, they don't take off the tappett cover to do it?????

Guess what...they didn't check your valve clearances properly as required by Toyota
