  • mudflaps!!

    hi,
    this is my first post!
my husband and I bought our first VX Prado in may this year. The first time we towed a trailer our back window was smashed from rocks hitting the trailer and flying up!! This made us really cranky and since we have purchased some rock tamers but they have done nothing!! Can anyone give us some suggestions because we aren't very happy!!
    thanks!!

the rock tamers are usually pretty good as long as they're almost dragging on the ground.perhaps fit some rubber between the two mud flaps of the rock tamers also?

With any full flap or extended flaps ensure that they dont touch the groud too often - the loose gravel they will 'rake' up the rocks and make things worst.

hyndsie, do a search and you'll find heaps of info. Toyota now have new flaps, mine were fitted yesterday under warranty.

Have seen people put cardboard or that plastic signage that real estate agents put out the front of properties taped to the rear windscreen.

Hi, do you have stone guards on your trailer? If this is placed along the draw bar both sides then they will decrease the damage substantially, no guarantee to stop it though.

If you are towing a trailer on dirt highways and want to avoid stone damage you must do everything right. There is a stone guard you can get that attaches to a rail just behind the rear bumper and is a sheet of something that looks like shadecloth from here to the front of the trailer body under the 'A' frame. No stones can get to the front of the trailer but the underside of the trailer cops it instead (better that than the Prado) A low flap will do damage if it hits the road when the rear suspension compresses as it will throw stones at the trailer and vehicles going the other way. Remember that damage hardest to control is from stones kicked up by your front tyres. Driving slower also reduces the energy in flying rock. That said i did a back window crossing the Plenty River doing 60kmh, a rock cleared the mud flaps, rock flaps, cow catcher stone guard, hit the the top of the trailer spare tyre and did $550 damage to the back window. Now I know that the best way to avoid damage by stones on the back of a vehicle is leave the trailer at home.

I have a stone guard fitted to my trailer, and I also have a rear window protector that I can velcro on when I need it. Try www.obiesoutback.com.au or call Mike O'Brien on 03 97431351.

We have had the longer mudflaps fitted by Toyota. Our dealer was great but we did have to wait. We got a phone call the day before we were heading off across the Anne Beadell. They organised that they were fitted before we left. Go see you dealer about them and don't let them put you off. Ours were fitted under warranty and they also offered to repaint the rear if there was stone damage (we didn't have any because we didn't really go off road prior to the fitment). I must say the longer flaps were great. We found out about the longer flaps through this site so thanks everyone.

We have had a rear window protector for every 4WD vehicle we have and do not tow off the blacktop without it attached. Go to a local plastics fabricator that and they will measure and cut a sheet of perspex for you. Touch wood, but we have never had a rear window broken and have done a lot of outback touring towing a camper trailer. The Prado is not so easy to fit though due to the rear deflector, wiper and brake light.

                      Cheers,
                      Di and Bruce
