Low speed tyre squealing when going around roundabouts.

Hi all. Just seeking advice on a recent problem.

When I go around roundabouts in the last cpl of months, there is a significant tyre squeal. I have original tyres with 56000 km on them. Im thinking that its mainly polished road surfaces with low grips tyres. Anyone have any bright ideas ?

Try checking your pressures. Low tyre pressure can result in your complaint

Thanks for that, but the pressures are as placarded. Im not keen to over inflate. It started after I returned from a long trip. I remember a similar thing in a hilux years ago. D.

Hi Dave,

I would suggest that placard pressure is not the beginning and end of it all. Ultimately, selecting the appropriate tyre pressure is a compromise of many elements.

Since your tyres are squealing at the placard pressure, then as letsgoplaces stated, it's likely that increasing your pressure will improve that. It's at least worth an experiment.

The question is, what pressure is best for you?

Note that the pressures listed on the placard are cold tyre pressures, so depending on when you measured your pressure, you may already be under-inflated.

Understandably, manufacturers have to come up with a recommended pressure and that requires them to make assumptions about the typical load and desired ride quality of the vehicle (amongst other factors). These pressures may not be the best pressure for your purposes.

One of the guides I've adopted is called the 4PSI Rule. It makes for an interesting read.

Might be an alignment issue, probably toe-out after your trip. The inside (unloaded) tyre maybe sliding through the roundabout even with a minimal slip angle.

1st problem, original tyres Dunlop Grandtreks, second problem tyre placard states 29lbs for a 2 tonne plus vehicle is too low, I typically run around the 36lbs and a lot of Pradopointers will tell that is low as well, try pumping them up a little bit and see how they go.

I run 40psi for better fuel economy and even wear.
Some roads may have been recently resealed which makes the tyres squeal.

You will find its the grandtrecks and I bet are feathered on the outer edge ?? Common and especially with these tyres. I run 40psi in mine all the time round town, just about every round about I go around I get a slight squeal some more then others, its not wheel alignment or anything like that. Bet if you put some other brand tyres on it, the noise will stop, its the soft edge and tread pattern of the grantrecks, did it with my 95 and my 120 does it, as soon as I ran a different tyre on the 95 it stopped....Cheers Steve

Good post Steve and I totally agree.......the manufacturer's recommendation on tyre pressure is wrong, it gives a better ride but costs you in the wear department and fuel economy . 40 all round on mine.

I have noticed a squeel going around bends and roundabouts as well. It is not because the are the Dunlops and not because they are under inflated. I am running BFG AT's at 25 to 40 psi depending on conditions. Last weekend i was driving up a windy mountain road and the tyres would squeel at low speed whenever a front tyre was on the painted line left or right. I am worried about tyre wear but that is not the only problem, my wife gets car sick and if I make the tyres squeal, I must be going too fast, even if cyclists are overtaking us. Can the toe-in be incorrect when turning and ok in a straight line? How can this be checked?

You will need to find a trusted tyre dealer and take him for a drive, that's the best you can do.

I have always had bf at's on previous 3 vehicles 2 of them prados and never experienced tyre squeal on them. I would be putting your prado into a tyre place, Bob Janes or some one like that and get them to totally check the front end, I didnt even get a squeal on shopping centre floors with the bf's, you know the shiney sealed floors, but get heaps of it with the grandtrecks, christ they do it turning into my driveway especially when its wet, I thought the BF A/T's were a bit skittish in the wet going around the bends where I live, the grantrecks are shocking, I dont trust them at all going round bends in the wet......Prados are bad for feathering on the outer edge on the passengers side front, even mine the tyres have been rotated every 10k but you can tell the tyre thats been on passengers front.When I had bf's on the previous vehicles firstly hilux i did 60 thou on them before i sold it and I reckon there was another 40 to go, the petrol 95 wore extremely well all round and the diesel 95 I had was the same, definately due to the squarer edge the Bf's had. I run 45psi in my Grandtreks. Tyres do not squeal at all and fuel economy is a LOT better.

ON888 if you're running 45psi unloaded, be watchful of the tyre wearing faster in the centre due to over-inflation
But that's just my opinion
