  • OK, some good news. The rattle and vibration is fixed. What I had to do was remove the air cleaner box and shorten the spaces/sleeves at which the bolts go through and are inserted through the rubber grommets at the base of the air box. The original length was only 1mm-2mm too long not allowing compression on the rubber mounts thus allowing the box to move freely.

    • I notice that this thread spans nearly 3 years so well done Toyota n your prompt and dutiful response to your customers issues. Anyway off track. I too have the dreaded drone ( 150 2009 gxl) and after driving a mates new one the other day it's still present in these newer models. I have read this thread in its entirety, some of it twice like the DIY fix which will be this weekend for me. However I have noticed the 1500 drone in my case it is not apparent till the car reaches operational temperature. Any short drives from cold and no noise at all. So not being totally up on what's going on with regards to inter coolers and the like but what changes when it's hot. Is the car not drawing air from the outside world? Be keen to know as this May be a key thing perhaps.

      • I have a 2014 GXL with air tech snorkel and under load you can hear the normal diesel rattle that fine but then it sounds like static hash coming from the snorkel not constant and only when going up a hill and the engine is sucking more air in I suppose. Any ideas ?

        • Added an airtec snorkel on Friday, no more 1500rpm drone noise and no noticeable noise with the added snorkel. Have noticed that there are no visible drain holes on the snorkel...should this be a concern? Click image for larger version

How so? Water in the air intake is not a good idea, and with no visible signs of water removal via the snorkel other than the drainage valve on the air intake, its a concern!

              • The Safari (I can't answer for TJM) head design spins the water out of rain so no issue and I have checked the paper filter after of hours driving in the rain, no problems. Any drain, including the flap under the airbox is a source for water in as well as water out unless you want to spend the money and put a proper drain trap on of course.

Snorkels are for dust, not water crossings. The wading depth doesn't increase with a snorkel, but you won't clog as many air filters if you do a lot of dusty roads.

It's a common misconception that a consumer car with consumer accessories like a plastic snorkel is so you can drive with water up to your windshield.

Two things will happen before the snorkel will help in deep water:

                  1. The car will float and the wheels will leave the ground causing you to go no where;
                  2. The car will the flood full of muddy water destroying the electrics, the fabrics and placing corrosive mud and water into cracks and crevices as it sinks.

Both of these will occur before the snorkel has made effect in the engines air supply.

If the engine is still running and you get out on one piece you might just get away with a repairable write off. But since the snorkel is not airtight you would have ingested water and even a whisp of vapour is enough to bend a rod.

Most people who have claimed to cross uber deep water prob never realised that the bow wave was keeping the depth at the front a good 300mm lower due to momentum, thus rendering the snorkel as false security.

Still, each to their own, not my problem!

                  • Thanks for everyone's feedback, although I do not intend to take my girl swimming... small creek / water crossings at around half tyre height would be the most I would attempt! My concerns relate to normal driving in the rain, some rain drops will no doubt get drawn in, with no drain holes anywhere for this to drain out of the snorkel, where else is the water going to go other than down into the intake??

                    cheers all

                    • Where do you think the water goes before you had your snorkel?

As mentioned the (Safari) head will allow rain water to drain out. Think the TJM is the same.

At least on my 120 1KD-FTV, there is outlet at the bottom of the airbox (where the air cleaner is) any water accumulates it will probably drain out there.

I would have thought rain water would not enter the air intake where the original fitting being located inside and above the wheel arch??

The 150 diesel also has a drainage point at the air intake and I can see how water would exit there, although the concern I have is that more rain drops would be entering via the snorkel due to its location and design.

(im not mechanical except for the basics and what I learn here so apologies if I'm coming across as a dumb ass!)

Not wanting to high jack the 1500rpm drone thread about a snorkel issue, I have started a new thread, someone else must have the same snorkel on a 150, and it maybe my lack of knowledge that I am over thinking it?

                        • The water crossing v dust snorkel debate has been done to death on here and other fora. chimma if you have concerns about the TJM product I suggest you talk to TJM.

Likewise, I have a safari snorkel, have driven in torrential downpours for hours and never had an issue, the design of the head, allows the water to drain away before it goes down the snorkel, what little water does get down the snorkel is not enough to affect the filter and dries out rapidly due to the heat in the engine bay. Well that's my take on it anyway.
Back on track with the thread, having a snorkel may fix the drone but not the rattle, have to find time to try Krypto's resomat fix.
