  • Apple geeks, help with factory USB

As i have mounted the iPad on the dash I need to charge it, plugged the apple cable into the factory USB and it won't, it will charge my phone though but not te pad, have to use a cigarette lighter type charger to charge the iPad, any thoughts as to why no charging with the factory USB??!

    Hutch

I think you will find that the Factory USB socket as got a current limiter (500m/a) and the Ipad requires approx 1amp

not rated for the mil amps needed

You can get one of these http://www.baintech.com.au/baintech/baintech-single-usb-socket-surface-mount

there is also a double USB which would be better in my opinion. When powering the iPad you only use one of the two USB ports

It will charge when the iPad is not turned on. Although when you've got the iPad switched on it won't be able to recharge it fast enough, should still slow down battery use though?

Apple put in a block to stop iPads from charging from computers. I use a cigarette lighter to USB adapter and that works.

I haven't tried it out yet but just purchased a cig lighter to dual USB from Jaycar. One USB is 1 amp for the iPhone and the other is 2.1 amp for the iPad. Saw it in their latest online catalogue.

Yep same problem here, you need a specific iPad cigarette charger 10 watts, most places sell them I purchased this one http://store.apple.com/us/product/H2...de=MTc0MjU4NjA and it works well, nice low profile.

Not entirely correct, it will charge off of a computer but it has to be a powered USB port, most laptops only have 1 powered USB port. The iPad has a 10 watt charger unlike the iPod and iPhone that use a 5W charger. Our iPads will charge off of our iMac through the rear ports only, not via the keyboard USB.

Rob grab a Baintech power port as above or you can get a 12v socket adapter as well for it.

Unfortunately I had something in the cig plug already so was hoping to use the USB, looks like I will have to put the double adaptor back in.

We have run an extension cord from the 240 volt inverter in the back of the car under the rear draws, it comes out in front of the back seat in the middle on the floor and has 2 out let's on the end of it. We just plug our I phone / I pad / I pod / I pod touch / i what ever charger in or 2 and keep every thing charged on the go
When stopped we us a can verter in the car or camper .

I've been given a PowerBolt Micro Car Charger rated 2.1 Amps and is supposed to 'quick charge iPad'. Tried it out but the device seemed to get very hot and did not charge up as expected. Does anyone use this device on an iPad 3, 64gb or should I use something that is in this thread?
