Just a a quick look through this post at everyones comments.

My understanding is with the changes to consumer law some eighteen months ago is, as a consumer you have an 'expectation' that a 'product' will last a 'Reasonable't period of time. What is 'Reasonable' I hear you all ask? Well I ask the same question and the simple answer would be best described in this example.

Purchase a cheap branded/valued item lets say TV that comes with a 12 month warranty then that's probably 'reasonable' if it only lasts 18 months or more.

Purchase a $2.5 k or more TV that's a reputable brand with a 12 month warranty and it lasts 18 months or so this is probably 'unreasonable' and it would be the expectation the 'seller/retailer' would look after you.

Due to these changes in the consumer law there really is no need to purchase extended warranties any-more. Having said that the new laws are yet to be tested.

My 120 just come out of factory three year warranty and personally could not justify the 2k+ I was quoted. I have taken the risk and done without and time will tell in the next two years 55,000 km remaining.

Until these laws are tested you have to make a judgment call.

One comforting fact is these laws have been put in place to protect the 'Consumer'.

I glanced through the T&C's of the policy and it would appear that this is no different from a factory warranty in terms of what is covered. It also alows servicing by a mechanic and not Toyota from what I can read.

OK all clear now. Exrended factory warranty is given at the discretion of the dealer and cannot by law be charged for. So its free.
Pigs arse. It would be factored into the price of the car and therefore is only available on purchase of a new vehicle. Factory approved extended warranty is a third party insurance policy and not to be compared with the factory warranty. Different animal and quite inferior in many ways but probably better than nothing. The dealer makes good commission on selling it to you and by not offering the extended factory on new vehicles has more room to move on price as they do have to pay for this. Plus, a good buck in flogging you insurance which you can buy at any time is another sweetener. My advice is insist on the factory one when you buy a new car and forget the insurance until the warranty is close to running out. You may not even have the car by then and the better part of two grand is a rip off.

Exactly what I am doing, waiting for the factory warranty to run out and then see what I can get out of them.

I'm going to bite the bullet and get the 3 year 100000k option as I have only done 40000 k's (albeit hard as some would tell me ). Even if the warranty only covers drivetrain I believe the cost of a new engine is over $12k and a transmission is close to $6k so the "insurance" is worthwhile to me.

See ya on the tracks, Richo.

Mines up in January so anytime between now and then is fine.

Mines due mid Feb so will be looking at getting prices. The aftermarket one has been recommended to me but I'll be looking at both.

Any vehicle Hutch would benefit from having an extended warranty, not just the Diesel.

I also decided not to pay for the extended warranty up front, as I would be paying the better part of 2 grand for something I won't use for at least 3 years. Who knows, I may not even have the car by then ! When my standard factory warranty is almost up I will review my options then.

$2K extra on a lease at today's interest rates over 5 years doesn't work out to much...
