  • Is Privacy Glass UV proof?

Is the privacy glass UV protected?

After booking in my Kakadu for window tinting, old mate say's that they will install a UV film over the back windows and then match the front two windows to that shade, or as similar as they can match it.

Is this overkill, if the back windows are already UV proof then I don't need to spend the extra coin for the extra install.

He also spoke about metal and non metal films and some flash cars need the non metal which is more $$$, only by by $50 for the whole car though. Quoted $400 non and $350 for metal film.

Anyone in the industry who knows for sure? What's your take on it?

    Cheers

    Hi

He is 100% correct I checked this out with several reputable companies, the privacy glass is tint only and has no UV protection, they put a clear tint on the inside of the tinted windows that is UV protection. The reason for the non metalised tint (I used 3M and are very happy with it) is the FM and AM aeriels are in the glass on the rear side windows, if you put metalised rint on these then the radio reception will be reduced, I found this out on the work car and ended getting the tint on the rear window replaced.

See ya on the tracks, Richo.

    PS:From memory my 150 cost $395.00

Correct, but for those still looking at buying a Prado with Privacy tint, haggle for free uv protection, my dealer threw it in even after screwing the price down.

              Hi all.

First more UV protection is probably good but I was under the impression that glass and plastic was pretty opaque to UV anyway.

I wear photochromic glasses, the ones that turn dark when exposed to sunlight. The UV is what causes them to turn dark. The trouble is while they turn dark outside the car they are next to useless as sunglasses inside the car as they refuse to darken appreciably. I have now obtained a pair of permanently tinted glasses for use while driving. ( N.B. I believe there are a newer variety of these photochromic glasses that work better inside the confines of the car.)

The following is from a cancer council information sheet.

              http://www.cancercouncilnt.com.au/fo...t%20-%20UV.pdf

Ordinary car or truck window glass filters
out approximately 97% of UVB and 37%
              of UVA radiation. Laminated windscreens,
which are made from a tough plastic layer
bonded between two panes of glass, block
all UVB and about 80% of UVA. Clear or
tinted films can also reduce the amount of
UVA and UVB radiation coming through
              the side glass.

And from the transitions website (makers of photochromic glasses

              http://www.transitions.com.au/Why-Tr...tocromic-Tech/

              BEHIND THE WINDSCREEN
Most photochromic lenses react primarily to UV light. That’s why they change when you’re in the sun and remain clear indoors. The glass in car windscreens block more than 99% of UV light, so most photochromic lenses do not darken noticeably in the car.

We offer an everyday lens solution. Transitions® XTRActive™ lenses contain a specially designed photochromic dye that responds to both UV light and short wavelength visible light, so they are able to moderately adapt in the car.

              Cheers

Hey Barry, privacy glass is only coloured glass - no UV properties at all.
Do not what so ever get the "Package Deal" of window tint, paint protection or fabric protection from a dealer, unless they are going to throw it in for FREE!!!!!
My brother is a tinter and does this work for car yards....all three the yards don't pay more than $300 - $500 for and will charge you $1,500 and above.
CAUTION about paint protection.....what they don't tell you is to get any protection at all it [B]has [B] to be done every year.
Get yourself a good Carnuba Wax or Synthetic polish ( $20 - $50) which is non abraisive and do your car every 6 months, and wash every week or fortnight.

just remember don't use metallic based tint as that will interfere with your radio reception, your aerial is on the rear side windows.

I've just had my Toyota 86 tinted by the guy who does the tinting for Kim at Detail Evolution in Brisbane. Kim also did Opti-coat paint protection for me. The tinting was also organised by Kim and was everything was paid to Kim. I had 3M 35% put on the car and regret getting the Prado tinted and paint-protected through Express Tinting rather than Kim.

The Opti-coat paint protection is also a newish product to the market (well, 3 years IIRC but only boomed recently). The thing is as hydrophobic as the desert (water just slides right off).

I had my tinting done by MotorOne at slacks creek south of brisbane. I used them on the last car I had and even after I stupidly put too much rubbish in the back and squished the door closed and some chair legs scratched a chunk out of the tint about the size of a 20 cent coin, it didn't peel or lift at all. I expected once I'd torn that big a chunk out it would peel and lift up at the edges over the years but when I sold it 3 years later it still looked like I'd only just torn a chunk out of it which I was pretty impressed with.

I purchased a Kakadu last week and tinted it today. Toyota head office was quick to reply, 1 hour from phone call. They sent me some information and replied with 'Regrettably we do not have information regarding UV or Solar Rejection as they now report on the glass in terms of Visible Light Transmission'.

The information was: Click image for larger version

In summary with charcoal factory tint all windows behind the drivers and passenger come from the factory with Visible Light Transmission rate of 20%. I believe in NSW that is illegal as RMS wants all windows to be maximum 35%. Reading about infrared radiation from light and my experience in sitting in the hot sun today behind the privacy glass in the 2nd row and the drivers window, I could feel my face heating up quickly in 22 degrees air temperature (Sydney). Compared to my 2nd Prado, still to sell, it has 35% legal tint on clear glass and I can not feel any heat. I expect in summer that I would feel extremely hot without tint so today I went with Johnson carbon tint 35% to the front and Johnson 70% to all the rear windows. On pearl white it looks great. The second advantage of the tint is in the event of an accident the glass should hold together rather than spraying over my children.
2013 Kakadu, pearl white, Cooper ST MAXX 275 65 18 123Q tyres, Safari Snorkel, ARB UVP, diff breathers, UHF GME TX3345, Red Arc 2nd battery, BMW luggage hdp, tint, ARB bull bar, synthetic winch, OME 2" lift, LED Intensity spot lights, ARB side steps, Kaymar rear bumper with 2 JC, spare and LED pole ligh, ARB compressor, ARB front air locker, Toyota rear diff lock.

Simply, privacy glass is coloured only and has no UV protection, if you go to any reputable tint shop they will put UV tint to approx the same colour on your front windows and then apply a clear UV tint to all other windows, cost is the same as having a standrad Prado tinted.

Also ensure that they use non metalic tint on the two side windows in the cargo area as this is where the radio antennas are located in the glass. If metalic tint is applied you will get a significant reduction in the radio reception.

See ya on the tracks, Richo.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good cross sell story.

Sorry to dispel a myth, but normal glass significantly cuts UV transmission without needing to be coated in your $50 notes.

Simple test put your hand on UV tinted and non UV tinted glass in the sun you will notice the difference, also take a photo of your upholstery at the top of the seat when new and then 4 years down the track, oops too late resale value screwed with trashed upholstery, never mind the skin cancer that serious travelors will get from prolonged sun exposure. I think that may be why they have increased the sun protection level to 50+.
