  • Checked mine too. GXL Update diesel GXL auto -4th Sept. 2013 build date.
Mine doesn't have the new guard as shown by Krypto with the weld.
However, mine is definitely different to both the new and old guards shown in Krypto's photos!
The old to me seems fairly 'flat' while mine has a few 'pressings' along it like the new but still very different to the new reinforced one. I hope this makes sense?
I will not be pleased if mine is not addressing the cracking issue.

    • Its almost like they are made in different factories. Like I said earlier luckily the number of failures is relatively low.

David, make sure you are looking at the passenger side as this is the side the photo was taken. The right hand side understandably looks different to the photo.

Other vendors are starting to go this way, with the same physical screens/buttons fitted across all models and the Satnav functionality enabled either through hardware or software upgrades by the dealer (obviously at a cost). Saves them manufacturing multiple dash layouts, keeps prices lower by only selling people what they want and most importantly (for the manufacturers to make $$$ anyway) quick and simple for them to activate in the dealership and still charge a fortune for the privilege while tying buyers to OEM upgrades that they will no doubt charge a for as well....
i was chatting with my dealer today,

he said its available to upgrade now its an aftermarket process though and costs around $1600. he didnt explain the whole process as we were both rushed for time.

          anyone else heard of this?

          regards

          • There have been aftermarket Sat Nav upgrades available for a while now.

If you contact a reputable Auto audio visual company they should be abe to assist.

Dealerships would be getting someone in to do this anyway.

              • Anything is now possible as Toyota has decided to use a intelematics system. See:

But will Toyota allow Garmin or TomTom etc to develop an app for the system!

Having had a play with the Toyota Link, I would happily pay $100 say for a TomTom or Garmin App for my headunit that uses my phones GPS via bluetooth.

So not really an option, you just have to drive around all day with the lights on.
This is a joke Toyota needs to provide a fix for this, It is dangerous!! If you are tall you need to bend down while driving to see what is on as the dash lights are too low to see during the day.

I will NOT be a goose with my headlights on during a sunny summer day. I Just cant do it.

On country roads it's actually a good idea to drive with lights on, it saves lives and it would be good if more people did it. Not sure that it makes as much difference around the city. Funny though that this is the purpose of the fancy DRLs that new cars including the Prado have.

                      • I think lights should be wired on whenever the engine is on. It does make most cars much more visible. A lot of cars are very hard to see against the colour of the bitumen especially if there is shadow on the road. My 150 is graphite colour and can be hard to see in broad daylight against some road surfaces as are a lot of dark colours and depending on the background some of the not so dark colours.

Anything that increases visibility and saves lives should be encouraged if not mandatory..

                        • I agree that vehicles on the highways should have lights on for better viability. You need to be seen for up to 2km away if somebody without a lot of grunt wants to overtake coming towards you. This is particularly true in poor light conditions (sun not shining). However running with headlights on all the time on corrugated roads and on tracks will trash the globes. Try shaking a hot globe and see how long it works for. Good drivers don't need factory boffins making decisions for them.

                            • I could not agree more I am an educated driver that has the ability to drive to the road conditions, in low light or hwy driving headlights are a good idea.

                              • Volvo's have done this for years as have motor bikes. Personally I would rather the choice. I wonder whether the dealer can disable the feature as it is not a legal requirement here in Aus.
