Been thinking about the "smart key" system and how that complicates the idea of taking along a spare key for insurance on long trips . Has anyone tried an insulated container of some sort to allow the carrying of a second transponder ?

Taking a spare key on long trips

We recently did a outback trip where we took the spare key as well...... What I discovered was that as long as u used the "Push button" on the remote, u could safely lock your car and know that no one could simply come along and grab the Drivers/passengers door handle and get into the car..... I also noticed that when I approached the car and then tried to open the Front Doors that I couldn't. I had to use the remote to unlock the doors..... Worked great
But...... the down side of this was that everytime you walked away from your car and u didn't bother to lock it due to what ever reason, then u are exposed to someone simply coming along, hoping into the drivers seat and starting your car and driving off.....cheers..... Rob (macca)

The safest and easiest way is to take the battery out of the second fob and leave the fob & battery in the glovebox. Take the little metal key out of one of the fobs and stash it to the outside of your car like you would any old fashioned type of key. Or get a special spare metal one cut.
You second fob is safe from being lost/damaged as it's in the g/box and you can always access your car with the metal key at any time should you loose your main key. Simple.
Cheers

If going with other people, take the battery out and put it in somebody else's glove box. If you loose your keys you need to be able to get to your spare key whilst the car could be locked.Stephen Bloomer
