  • Pollen filter and rat piss (no joke)!

I got up early this morning to go to the beach and put the A/C on to have a woeful smell come forth from the vents. Pulling the pollen filter out revealed a yellow patch and a lump of rat poo in the pollen filter which I know belongs to the rat that took up residence in my garage about a week ago...

Can anyone advise the best option for an aftermarket filter and if there is any dramas running the A/C without the pollen filter in it for a few days?

Also, does anyone know if the rat would have actually got into the vent or is it likely to have just drained into it from the top? I can't see exactly which one the fresh air inlet is in the engine bay as there are a few grilles around there, can anyone advise which could be the one?

As for the rat... Game on you little bastard!

A cheap alternative for replacement filter is the white scouring pads available from bunnings,Can't see an issue with running without a filter for a short while.
My question would be how would the rat get into the aircond ducting.

I got one of these for my 150 and one for the Wifes Camry. They are a bit flimsy compared to the genuine ones, but fit and are cheap.

        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Cabin-Air...f4fef20&_uhb=1

Pretty sure the one in my Prado was from 2010 and the one in the Camry was from 2007. Made a huge difference to the fan efficiency! They looked disgusting. I'll be changing them at least once a year from now on.

Won't hurt if you take it out, temporarily.

        Cheers Brad.

Bursons and REPCO sell aftermarket filters for the 120 so perhaps they will have replacements for the 150 assuming it's different.

Can't work out how the rat lined up the air intake.

It looks like it's only affected the first 40mm or so of the filter so for the mean time I have cut the bad part out and refitted it. Will order one in. It appears that they are different to the 120. Supercheap and Autobarn can get a Ryco one for about $50. Seems like a lot for a simple paper element. Hate to think what Toyota charge.

Id be more worried about the prick of a thing eating through your electrical wiring in the prado !!! If the set up is the same as the 120 he wouldn't have got down in under where the filter go's anyway but has just found its way onto the top of the grill where the filter sits and dropped one just to piss you off. The inlet for the external air in the 120 is up under the top of the bonnet where the wipers are, not sure if the 150 is the same but I would imagine the air would come in around the same area. It wont hurt running the aircon without it providing your not driving in extremely dusty condition's. We have been driving around for years running our aircon's without filters. They were only introduced in the 120's . They definitely stop dust and shit getting down into the evap box which in extreme dusty conditions will eventually block them up.....I just hope the rat is no longer in the vehicle because I know I would shit if it come out at me while driving along. ......Cheers Steve

                Hi there,

I just had a new filter fitted my Local Mechanic & it seems much better quality than the Toyota.

Westfil (Made in PRC) WACF0040 Cabin Filter, Interchangeable with RCA 164P, OEM:87139-06050 Toyota.

                Anti-bacterial, Anti-mould, Anti-pollen.

I don't know the cost, haven't got the account yet.

Westfil, 1/16 Ada Ave BROOKVALE NSW 2100.

had the same rat problem, he ate thru the filter so i put poison on it and wrapped it in steel mesh so if he is still in there he will eat the bait. if he isnt in there he wont chew back in.

I was pretty sure the rat had just done a long drop onto the filter from above, near the windscreen on the passenger side, but you say it chewed your filter?

How would a rat or even a mouse get down to the filter through the screens and the duct?

I would get that guy dead as soon as possible! If its going to get into your car and chew up your electrics there will be trouble!
One got into my cousins discovery, chewed up air bag wiring and other wiring, makes for thousands and thousands for re wiring.

im not sure how it got in, the mechanic found the hole chewed thru the filter at the service. i had previously had trouble in the winter with a rat storing dog biscuits on top of the warm engine, he had chewed thru the plastic bucket i kept the biscuits in, and transferred them onto the engine, i had to vaccum up the mess and set traps under the bonnet at night,-maybe worth a try?

I to have had a rat/mouse chew out my pollen filter. Toyota found it on the 10k service hasn't happened again so either the rodent is gone or it happened when we were away somewhere.
