  • Sand Driving - LC150 Diesel or LC200 Petrol

If your primary offroad use was sand with no towing, which would you choose .... Prado 150 Diesel or LandCruiser 200 Petrol?

The LC200 Petrol should have Crawl and KDSS.

The 150 Prado in my price range of $40k is likely to be a GX with no Crawl nor KDSS.

Sand Driving - LC150 Diesel or LC200 Petrol

Opens the question of where you will find a 200 for $40k???

Now if you we're to compare the v6 petrol 150 and a diesel it would make sense.

If your budget is 40k, your going to be pushed by about another 25% over your budget to even get into a base second hand 200 series.

Can offer you first hand advice on this topic!

My previous vehicle before my Prado 150 was a 200 series petrol and i highly recommend you don't buy one unless you have money to burn.

I live in the country and I was getting 17L/100 kms driving like a grandma and 20L/100kms in the city. As soon as I hit the trails for a weekend I would be getting over 30L/100kms, it was so high that my trip computer could no longer calculate my fuel consumption. Keep in mind premium unleaded is also very expensive.

I absolutely love the 200 series cruisers and plan on buying a diesel one further down the track, however the Petrol seriously robbed me of all my savings over the 6 months I owned it and the depreciation and demand on the market out there for them is very bad - they're cheap for a reason. I lost a lot of money and learnt the hard way.

Highly recommend the Prado - you'll love it. Good all rounder, just not as big and luxurious.

I have driven a 200 on the beach and went well but struggled staying in the tracks because it is wider than most other vehicles. Still did it pretty easy though.

There are plenty around for that price and they seem to be better value than the used 150s .. just take a look on carsales.com.au ... almost bought a 2012 GXL UZJ200R for $42k a few weeks ago with 100k kms .. the good ones sell quickly so just setup an alert or check everyday.

Mate of mine has a 120 auto diesel and 200 auto diesel. He prefers the 120 as it is more agile and stops better, both requirements of sand driving plus it is lighter. If you want to stick a 3t caravan behind it then the 200 otherwise stick with the Prado.

The V6 doesn't seem to be any cheaper than the D4D.
The D4D seems to be very reliable with no maintenance issues.
Hence might as well have the lower fuel consumption of the D4D.

Thanks for another fuel consumption feedback .. I was reading the posts over at lcool and about half the guys seem to get 15L/100km around the city, then the other half were getting about 20L/100km. Definately with tyres, racks, bull bar, then the fuel consumption shot up to 20L/100kms guaranteed!

Odd, cheapest 200 on car sales last night was over 48k.

Maybe recheck your search filter ... just grab the Toyota and UZJ200R and there is currently a total of 11 cars under $40k .. for the VDJ add an extra $5k for similar high km cars.

I would avoid the petrol 200, go the diesel and sit back and hold up traffic like the rest of us. unless you can get into the diesel 200 the Prado is a goer.

I know people run the petrols on gas, not sure what the difference is in relation to economy and setup costs of purchasing gas etc but something to consider if you can get one cheap enough.
