  • 2011 Keyless Entry Error

Looking for help/information about the keyless entry - smart entry system?

My keys (keyless remote/fob) are in my hand bag in the car, and while i went to lock the front door of the house, when i returned to the car, it had auto locked it self. We only have one key, and i've rang the toyota dealership who insist the car will not lock with the keys in the vehicle...

    any suggestions?

I've rang roadside assistance and locksmiths who are all hesitant to help as they believe it is a computer error and are concerned the alarm with activate and not be able to be stopped due to the initial computer error.

Could the key fob battery have died?

The dealer is correct the car should not have locked with a key fob with in a few meters.
      You need a 12 year old with a coat-hanger.
Yes sorry not much help !
      Very odd

No I don't think so. It worked fine to unlock the car only moments earlier. The only thing I can think of that might have created this issue, is the fact when I unlocked the car, I only opened the front passenger door. I put my hand bag and children's bag on the front seat, made a second drip with the families jackets, closed the car door, walked to the front door of the house and locked up, heard the car click (lock) ran back over to the car and it was locked. Keys in my handbag on my front seat!

I don't know if it has something to do with only opening the passenger door, but still the keys are in the car!! Arghhhh so frustrating

When I first purchased mine, the rear door sensor was missing. Whenever I opened the car to access just the rear, all interior lights would come on when unlocking via the remote, but the car would relock itself as it did not detect the rear door opening. I installed a new door switch and it is now all good.

I think your problem might be that your font passenger door switch is faulty....... Do the interior lights come on when you open that door (when the car is already unlocked)?

Good call Shodown, It must be either a computer malfunction or a switch malfunction/failure. A sticky switch is more likely.

It annoys me that there is no plan B here. You can have keyless entry.....or nothing!
I'd be happy for a conventional key attached to a fob and then a keyless start button. But even the keyless start I could take or leave. It's just another thing that can go wrong with the vehicle. I'm not a fan of trinkets that can fail and cause you grief! Toyota had a reputation for reliability and I think they are putting that at risk.

Or a poor earth. The switch uses the screw to earth to the body. If the screw has corrosion it might not be earthing properly.

The one I replaced went funny briefly till cleaned it up.

Bit over the top i reckon. I'm more concerned over the number of D4D failures over electronics that could stuff up on any car...

There are contingencies.... If the battery dies, you can hold the fob against the start button to bypass. Also, even though the car locked itself (again, most likely due to faulty courtesy switch), you should be able to unlock it by pulling on either of the front two door handles, as it should detect the fob in proximity.

You do know that there is a metal key in the fob that fits in the keyhole in the drivers door handle.

If the system is working properly the car should never lock with a fob inside, even with a fob outside if you try and lock it with the other fob inside the car it won't let you. While the faulty switch scenario is valid if you have the fob outside the car I don't think its valid I this case as it should sense the fob is inside the car and not lock it

I was some 150KMs away from home, I unlocked the car and we drove for a few k's then stopped to eat some doughnuts we had just brought, when we left the car to go to a park bench the doors would not lock, lucky they didn't as my 120 has an after market immobiliser as well as the factory one, without being able to unlock the car with the remote it wasn't going to be going anywhere.

Now keep a spare battery in the car.

I had the battery go flat in the fob recently (4 years old) and was able to start the Prado holding the fob close to the start button. Locking it was a different issue, touch pads did not work, fob button did not work, emergency key did not work so I just left it unlocked all day. So do not wait for it to go flat, change it early, they are cheap and easy to change yourself. One end of the fob has a small slot, insert the end of the little key and twist.
After owning the Prado for around three years I found that you can lock a fob in the vehicle. Having problems when tripping as SWMBO is prone to hiding a fob in her suitcase handbag so I cannot lock up and leave, you can, the touch pad will not work but the remote button does.
