  • EGR and the 1500 Drone

I have been thinking about this drone and as I don't have it (yet) I am wondering has anyone cured this by using an EGR limiting plate

My thoughts are that most people say that the drone is worse when the motor is ambling along at 1500 rpm in 5th gear on a level road.

As I understand it, this kind of load free driving is also when the air supply is reduced from the air box and the exhaust (EGR) is fed back into the motor.

As we have agreed the noise is caused by resonance in the air box, could this resonance be caused because the air has got no where to go as the EGR valve has reduced the flow out of the air box.

Waddya reckon, mystery solved or a load of ...............

    I see your a thinker & it's a good theory.
It certainly will change things, clearly for the better. But I have not had any customers complaining of drone.
But I do explain to them keep her close to 2000+ rpm & they are more efficient in 4th, basically unless going downhill.
One of these vehicles well looked after & operated correctly is only a joy to drive.
IMO 1500 drone is simply loaded a bit much for 1500rpm, but I could be wrong. Popping back a gear will save about 20% fuel cruising.
As speed increases the window of difference closes so does the saving. At around 100 on flat ground is about the same fuel use.

    It's a diesel but keep it closer to 2000 - 2500 than 1500.

      Hi ####,

When you say your customers have not complained about the drone, is that before or after the restricting plate is fitted.

It would be interesting if someone with the drone did nothing except fit an EGR restricting plate and see if the drone stops

        Not at all.

I will try & take more notice & ask them to take note.

They're mostly busy going on about how much more responsive it is at low load. Cold air! We have seen the light........

I do have a drone at 1500 on mine but it's not something that concerns me. No difference better or worse since fitting the plate. My take on it is similar to ####, engine is lugging at 1500. Sweet spot is 2000-2500 so that's where I drive it. Pretty much the only time I have it in D is cruising when on 100 or more.

100% agree with this. Could not have written it better myself.

It is also interesting that the default gear in S mode is 4th. This may also partly explain the change in gear selection in D post trani firmware update and the fact it holds 4th to speeds over 60km/hr
