Warranty and Rust ?

Hi Guys,

I have a 2012 GXL and there are rust spots showing up on the roof near close to the front windscreen along with fairly heavily on the towbar.

I have a year or so of the extended warranty left, would these typically be repaired under warranty ? I would like to think the towbar would be however expect the roof they would argue wear and tear or something as it is most likely from a stone chip

Found the same thing on my 2012 GX as well mate, three little rust spots on the roof. Would probably be easier finding a way to self remove and fix up maybe? No idea how to do that as yet.....

Probably sand it then repaint.

I painted heavily scratch on my other car bumper, very interesting job with great result

If it has ever had a windscreen replaced and the rust is right on the windscreen odds are the paint was scratched during windscreen replacement. As for the towbar, depending on how bad it is it will most likely be surface rust, purely cosmetic and they also won't be interested in it. A 4wd can see a lot of harsh environments within 4 years!

If the windscreen rust is what I'm thinking it is, I would be fixing it next time the screen is out, because to do it right the screen has to be out. The towbar I would give it a hit with the wire brush wheel (or sandblasting gun if you have one) then repaint with a rust kill paint in satin black.

good luck with warranty... mine had rust in the roof channels and they just gave me a 30 min masterclass on how to clean it up and apply some rust killing agent...ended up giving it a good scrub anyhow and the rust hasn't come back....

Most small rust spots that appear above a windscreen are from stone chips.
Not specific to toyota either as i repair quite a few small trucks with that exact senario.
Problem i find is all manufacturers now only put on the bare minimal amount of paint so not much is needed to be chipped for it to start rusting.
Try polishing it and that should seal it up to stop it spreading.

Friends Prado had rust where the roof skin folds down at the rear door. Major repair done under warranty and hasn't come back. He did have to fight for it.

Just ripped out my towbar (Genuine) assembly, got it sand blasted for $100, painted it with spray rubberised compound and finished off with spray Killrust (all from Supercheap Auto).
Rest of the vehicle is good but towbar assembly needed some serious attention before it got too bad. Poor original Powder Coating.

hi friends, bought 2015 2.8 GXL 2 months ago.
just noticed the few rust spots on the welds at bottom. never been to beach.
