Toyota have said that they wont be using android auto or car play but will be using a system called smart device link. Even if they do introduce this I expect it will be in new vehicles only. I have been looking for an after market unit with smartphone mirroring or a video interface for our head units but without much success.
It is annoying that I have an iGO map 2015Q4 on my phone yet have to tolerate a 2013 Q2 in the Prado.

Thanks hergy, I am pleased to hear that your dealer got you the 2014 map card.
I wonder why my dealer insists that they have one on order yet it could be "months" from being delivered.
Would you mind saying who your dealer is please? I can then ask my dealer why they can't get one if another dealer can. I can also name and shame them.

To be honest, I think that even the latest map version will probably still be problematic. On several occasions I've had the GPS trying to take me down a road that doesn't exist and has seemingly never existed. The age of the maps is one problem, but the quality is also an issue.

I think that a 2016 release is due soon so might be worth hanging out for that

My dealer has already told me that I would have to pay for the next release, apparently I am only entitled to the 2014 release which is still on order.
Quite how they expect me to advise others to buy a Toyota I cant imagine.

Has anyone looked at the Mazda 3 forum, they perhaps are fortunate that somebody managed to get root access to their units but since have publish many mods which override and add all sorts of settings. They can add maps as the .nng file can be changed to include the CID of the card they are using.

                Hi,

Yeah Ive got 2 x Tom Tom, a Garmin and Factory GPS in a Merc and a Commodore ute and they all have their own idiosincracies to where roads are and aren't. Even with all the issues I wouln't buy another car without GPS inbuilt. My 15 Prado hasn't got it as its a GXL and I would dump it tomorrow for another make but my wife likes it and she's the boss.

You only just missed out on having factory navigation as my 2015 GXL was manufactured in September and does have it even though it has maps from early 2013.
Does your head unit have the same apps as the ones with factory navigation? if so you have the option of fitting an interface allowing you to run what you like.
It is a shame we are on different sides of the country as I would swap my unit for one that I could add an interface to. Apparently a video input was removed from later models although I have not had this confirmed by anyone yet.

My 2016 GXL seems to have video input via a 4 ring 3.5mm Jack. I have not tried it but the manual indicates it only works with Apple devices. Video input is one of the audio Modes.

It seems to be a standard audio/video socket, I have tried running a raspberry pi in it, this works fine but of course as soon as the handbrake is taken off the video is disconnected. It would work from an android phone but you would need an HDMI to RCA converter then a cable to reduce to 3.5 mm plug and after all this it would stop working as soon as the vehicle moved.

Video input is one thing but for the screen to be useful you'd also need to be able to output the touch commands.

I was toying with the idea of installing Windows 10 on a Rasberry Pi, installing it behind the dashboard and routing the output through a toggle switch into the factory screen. Not much use however unless there is a way of capturing the output of the touch screen.

Yes this is why I offered to swap my later head unit for an earlier one as I think (although I wish someone would confirm) that earlier units can have an interface connected which would give touch control to a phone.
However I would be happy to be able to simply display navigation from a phone on the vehicle screen as then I could use up to date maps and not be stuck with Toyota's maps which have recent roads missing.
I know I go on and on about this but yesterday I searched using Toyota link via my head unit to find a store which was built around three years ago. It was found and the address added to the factory navigation. This appeared in the middle of a field as the maps do not have the roads included because they are so old.

I'd be very surprised if you could mirror a phone screen on the display and have working touch controls. If the head unit did have that feature I think Toyota would be making a pretty big song and dance about it, as that would be very useful for a lot of people.

I am not sure if it is OK to post links on here so just google "video interface Toyota Prado" and you will find many advertised for sale. The ones that allow screen mirroring and control fit in the ribbon cable between the head unit and screen.

I think you're pretty safe posting links on here. :-)

I see what you mean. I didn't realise you were talking about connecting a separate device to allow the screen mirroring.

Shame about the US$330-480 price and the minimum order requirements.
