  • New 2.8L or old 3.0L Prado

Any views on the following: buy a new 2.8L Prado or secondhand 3.0L diesel. It's soon time to retire my 90 series petrol and I am not sure about the smaller 2.8 diesel. I am reading that the 2.8L is a sluggish performer in some less commercial reviews.
I have done a lot of driving in the 4.5L Land Cruiser towing a heavy trailer and they are fantastic but too expensive. Although it may not happen, imagine the Prado with a 3.5L 6 Cylinder Diesel.

It is all relative but for general usuage I find the performance of my 2.8 fine. It seems to improve a lot with running in.

I second this, I have done about 20k now and the engine feels great since it has loosened up.

I used to drive a 120 with the 3L and I find the the 150 to be a better vehicle all round.

It has adequate power for accelerating and overtaking on the highway. It's not a sports car by any means but I didn't think people bought 4x4s to get around on a racing track.

I don't tow with my 150 but filled to capacity and with a full roof rack the engine still did fine (didn't really notice the extra weight) ..... fuel consumption went up a lot though.

The only thing I will say is that the 3lt has no dpf and is a well known engine with the regular checks to ensure longevity well documented. Personally I would look for one of the last of the 3ltr's but that's just my view. Still relatively early days for the 2.8ltr and it's hard to know what the medium/long term issues may be (if any) but the dpf seems to be causing some concern.
