Sam, great pics and information - really easy to complete. I followed your install and extended all the diff breathers. I secured the rear breather in the jack area. I extended the fuel breather along with the front transfer, transmission and diff breather. Good job mate.

I've noticed that most people who extend their diff breathers use one length of hose per breather which results in a handful of hose coming up into the engine bay. If the breathers are there to deal with the expansion of air, surely the volume of air passing through the hose doesn't necessitate a dedicated hose for each breather. If this is the case, would there be any issue with just running one hose to connect them all in series from the back diff to the front and up through to the engine bay?

          mickmac_42,

Take my vehicle for instance, auto trans has ATF in it. Transfer box has gear box oil,
diff has diff oil. Probably not a good idea to connect them together as cross contamination could occur,
this is the reason the manufacture has kept them seperate.

          Cheers

Hi Fellas. Regarding the idea that the diff's retain positive pressure. If I had a hisssss when I removed the filler plug I would expect to find my breather blocked. I have seen industrial gearboxes on a test bench after reconditioning though and they are test run-in hot for hours at 5 - 7 PSI positive pressure to prove the seals are going to hold. My KZJ95R had water in the rear diff after 40,000 km of highway running and it had never been near a drain even - I put it down to road spray during torrential rain and fitted breathers anyway. The front diff was fine which I put down to the bash plate stopping the road spray. Cheers.

Hi All, I've extended the rear diff breather up to the dual wheel carrier, it looks ok running the line with the reverse camera wiring then up behind the spare tyre, its quite high up and should be good for Cape York in mid May if they open the roads.

website states "Approx. length of breathers (including fitting) is 12cm"

Appears the thought is to use the volume of space in the bellows. Sounds reasonable to me and you don't have long lengths of hose running through the vehicle. My concern would be more so around debris in the water placing strain on the bellows/fittings.

I did my 2012 Prado's breathers today and it has changed slightly from my 2010 model. The third breather in the image now has a white factory breather cap on it and it is for the transmition. The other two go back to the transfer case. I now know why my auto filled up with water on my last vehicle. Now I have four hoses running up to the fire wall, Rear Diff, 2 x transfer case and Transmition. Sorry I didn't get a photo before I pulled it apart.

                  Regards

Agreed with Derby. The hiss sound is when the breather is block as you pull the factory breather off. Mine did the same and when you check the factory supplies breather it was completely block. That is not good for the diff.

the 120 Series had a y-piece between the transfer case and coupling case to one breather and a breather from the transmission. The 150 series has done away with the y-piece and now has 3 breathers coming from these same locations.

When I did Dave's BRC breather install - I used a pneumatic line y-piece connector just under the BRC filter block to rejoin the transfer case and coupling case breathers (as the BRC only allowed for 4 breathers).

All up both the 120 and 150 series prados have 5 breathers (not including the fuel tank breather) which should be relocated.

7 actually, if you include the rear pump for the airbags on a Grande and a set up for a winch.
