No worries. Now if I could just magically get smaller hands then I can do the tranny one. I can't reach it at all 😞

This probably a super dumb question but, what is the reason for extended diff breathers? I have 4x4 for the past 4 years and not needed them as far as I know anyway... I always hear ppl talk about em but no idea what for... (I had a 2011 Hilux manual used for moderate getaways etc.. no major river crossing just a few creek crossings to about the top of the wheels. I now have an auto prado)

@hookedon4wding, thanks heaps for taking the time to take pics and discuss your method. I've just fitted my diff, transfer and transmission breathers in my Prado 120 '08, ready for a trip to Cape York later this year.

                Cheers Tony

I was looking on ebay for a kit just to do the rear diff only. Noticed that kits now are using push on connectors with PU hose as compared to the old way of barbed connectors with rubber hose.
Is the push on connectors and PU hose up to the task. I notice they also sell PU hose repair kits so my thought that it is a bit easily damaged by stones etc may be right.
                  What are other peoples thoughts?

Push in connectors are good for higher pressure so no concerns there. More expensive though and make sure there is enough support where it is needed and enough flex where needed.

With a planned trip to Walhalla this weekend to give the Prado it's first taste of low range country (and water), I thought I'd better extend the breathers.

Here's my complete guide to doing al 4 breathers.

                      Rear Diff Breather

The rear diff requires a 1/8" BSP threaded brass fitting with a 1/4" tail barb. Simply unscrew the factory diff breather cap (passenger side of diff), screw the new fitting in, push some 1/4" hose onto the barb and run it to the engine bay. You could run it into the jack area or the fuel filler area but for ease of monitoring and to have them all in the same spot, I ran mine to the engine bay. I then used a small fuel filter on the end. Be sure to leave some slack in the hose near the diff to allow for up and down movement. Easy job, just time consuming to run the hose and cable tie it up out of harms way.

Thanks for your guide Sam, really good. Going to give it a go this weekend.

Can you tell me how much 1/4" hose you needed to get for the rear diff breather, running to the engine bay? 5m or more? Do you also have a descripton or photo of the small fuel filter you added to the end of this?

Also did you do the fuel tank? If you also have a guide on this one, it woud be really appreciated.

                      Cheers, Dave

Thanks for the great advice and guides here already. Can anyone confirm if transfer & transmission breathers are the ones with the blu dots? Any thoughts on what the other one with the white plastic cap may be for? 2011 Prado 150. Thanks.

                          Hi Howcow,

I have not gone looking for the breathers on my newer 2019 Prado yet. Maybe the white cap is for the front diff. Probably someone else will know for sure.

Nah, located the Front Diff bearther at the bottom of the fuse box behind the start battery. Anyone else have any idea about this additional hose in the photo? Cheers.

Hi, there are 2 for the transfer and 1 for the gearbox, so 3 in total - at least on my 2016 model. Been that way for a while. Quiet a hassle getting to them to extend... There is a good thread here https://www.pradopoint.com.au/forum/...diff-breathers

                                Hi

We have just purchased a new 2020 Prado 150 series and upgraded the suspension to allow us to tow our off road caravan. We intend doing a lot of driving in the Kimberley's with plenty of river crossings. I have been advised to install a breather extension kit to protect the diffs but on inspection notice the diffs now have a one way valve attached directly onto the diff which is different for our old 120 series. Given it now has the one way valve installed, what are peoples thoughts on installing the breather extension pipes? Is it a waste of money or do we still need to protect the diffs?
