  • 2010 Prado Multi-Information Display too small?

    Hi all,

We are getting close to get the new Prado after a test drive with my local dealer last week. One thing that has been bothering me since is the size of the LCD screen. The dealer only offer one model VX which has a 4.2 inch MID screen. It seems really nice that you can see the front and side of the vehicle. But 4.2 inch only? It is even smaller than my 3 years old Garmin nuvi GPS screen!

Does anyone find the MID screen too small to be useful? Anyone know if there is a replacement unit with bigger screen available?

    Thanks!

I wish I could. But there is only one grade available here in Taiwan, the VX. I asked if I can have bigger screen, the dealer said no.

if you only have one choice, the choice is simple. buy it.. i'm certain there will be aftermarket options for it available that will give it a bigger screen.

in my opinion (i own a GXL) the information that is displayed on it is suitable for the screen size, being that it is mainly text. the camera view is a little small. does the vx model in taiwan have other views other than just information and basic single camera view?

          Hi Dan,

Yes, I will probably have to wait for the aftermarket options.

In addition to the front and side view that can be activated anytime, rear parking view when put in reverse, the VX model in Taiwan also includes CRAWL control with multi-terrain monitor from 4 cameras, however without GPS. I am think about getting a Garmin 1370 or similar for the GPS. The Garmin screen will be strangely bigger than the Prado's small MID screen when installed on top of it, I think.

You have a nice rig buildup.

thanks alex.. i would have to say that with the multiple camera views - i personally think the screen is a bit small to be able to pick out detail that might be on the ground around the car.

i only have the reverse camera, and it's not the greatest, but i'm not trying to use it for any detail either.

            good luck.

I have the GXL, which only activates the screen with the reversing camera. Asked the dealer and he said I could not fit the optional GPS/ Sat Nav screens on the GXL. Does anyone know if there is something that will fit into the slot, or is there a way to fit a Toyota Sat Nav screen into the GXL slot?

                  Hey Yowie,

Eclipse make a headunit AVN726EA sat nav unit. Eclipse is a premium brand which is part of fujitsu ten that make car radios for toyota & other manufactuers.

Here is a link with a unit installed in the new prado. http://mr-dvd.com.au/image-viewer.htm?g ... ry5j-9.jpg

And another one, which it appears that they have swaped the position of headunit just above the air-con controls, personally a better position for controls & viewing etc. http://mr-dvd.com.au/image-viewer.htm?g ... ry5k-7.jpg

Here is a link to the eclipse website and you can find a authorised dealer in your area. http://www.eclipse-web.com.au/

i wonder how well it integrates with the standard features of the car..

maybe one could move the display fromt he top and put it in the gap left by the stereo being removed.

i also am curious how good the bluetooth and phone integration is - not much information on the website about it. a little bit more reading on some other websites shows that you may have to run another microphon specifically designed to suit the eclipse - which annoys me a little if true as it's another thing hanging off that isn't standard. one thing i like about the current position of the microphone is the fact the passengers can talk and are easily picked up by it.

Re: 2010 Prado Multi-Information Display too small?

Called the Kingsgrove office of Eclipse, and was told that there is one vehicle that they are having problems with at present, yes, it's the 2010 GXL Prado. The unit will be fitted over the section of the reversing camera, however, there is no fascia plate at present that suits the unit, so one has been requested from Japan. The fascia plate on the GXL is too big and will cover some of the Sat Nav screen. The camera should be able to be wired to the vehicle's current reversing camera. The bluetooth system is inbuilt into their units, so they may have to disable it. That is yet to be worked out.

The Fujitsu unit, AVN726EA, is very good, about $3,000- fitted, but a few of the units lately have had a bit of crackle in them. Fujitsu Japan said it is the fitment process causing the problem, Kingsgrove office said incorrect, it's the unit.

There is another unit, about $2,000 fitted, same sized screen of 7inches. The bloke told me it is pretty good also.

The fascia plates should arrive late June, he told me to call back then. Same would apply to other Eclipse stores around the country.

That's all I can tell you at present.

                          Yowie.
