  • Prado power - 2.8L turbo diesel engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission

2.8L turbo diesel engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission - I have been reading in different forums that the Prado lacks enough power? Even the car advise review Kakadu with a 2000kg boat....

    130@3400 / 450@1600-2400 (automatic)
I am waiting for a VX to be delivered. I don't have plans for towing a trailer / caravan etc. Just city and 4WD use.

in actual driving without a trailer etc is this power enough?

A few days driving around town will get you into the swing of driving a diesel if you haven't done so before. Let the torque do the work and don't worry about the power. Heaps of torque from 1500 rpm. It's relative lack of power is not an issue [ and this from a confirmed petrol head]. The diesels get better with more kms on them - mine with 20,000km had just really freed up.

I came from a V6 and was cursing at why I did it. I have now been driving the diesel for over 2 years and yes its a different beast for sure. If you are driving around town there is no issue its pretty quick off the mark and where it lacks is the +80km/h speeds. More power would resolve that I'm sure and it would be the best tourer by far. Unichip is the fix 184kw and 640Nm.

They are fine power wise if you are not towing

For towing I’d say not so good

They drive well motor and gearbox are in sync
6th gear seems to be a waste rarely gets used
I may look into diff gears to fix this, also torque converter likes to mostly stay unlocked at HWY speeds

they open up around the the 30,000 km mark and seem to have more power, never had an issue overtaking and it’s got all the touring gear on it

DPF is a huge issue that they keep saying they have a fix for and suspect they are full of it just buying time

If you wanted a little more a mild ECU tune would make a big difference in the drivability

It is going to brand new (when delivered). Colour choice - 2 month delivery time.

ECU Tune / unichip, will that not void the warranty?

Have seen plenty of Prado's drive at 100KMPH, would a new model (LCP VX) not be able to do so?

How would a new car not be able to drive at 100 km ph, nobody would buy one. It’s no sports car but it drives fine.

That is what i thought. Max speed is 110KMPH. Lot of people complaining that the Diesel does not have not enough power...
Maybe not enough to tow large loads fast, but enough for my needs .. which are City / freeway drive / plus 4WD driving etc.

I did not buy it to be a sports car, just bought it for the life style... Want to take my kids across the country.. 4WD driving etc.....

              Thanks....

If you want the vehicle for touring and 4wding then it will suit you fine.

Diesels in general have low down torque whilst petrols have high end power, it’s just the characteristics of the engines.

                Didn’t you test drive one?

They don’t have any issues going upward of 110, ours is setup for Touring it has all the gear onit and 95% of the time drives fine, there has been a hand full of very steep 100km/ph hills that it has struggled on and dropped below 100. very rare and it could very well be the older DPF tune that reduced boost ect while burning, or the torque converter won’t lock up

I do think the gearing is rubbish. even with stock rubber it barly uses 6th and low first is way to fast, go up a tyre size and it only gets worse I have been meaning to look into new Diff gears.

Overtaking seems fine don’t get me wrong it could always be better but never been an issue.

Not a long test drive. Not in open country and no trailer attached etc.

Thanks a lot for your replies.....

Recovery gear..... which brands do you recommend ? ARB / TJM?
Also is the stock Toyota Snorkel better or ARB etc?

Any reputable brand for recovery gear is ok but I personally have a fair bit of ARB gear.

as for the snorkel, get a airtec or safari. I went the airtec but it depends on which one you like the look of more imo.

Was reading the forums that if you have a Genuine Toyota Alloy Bullbar then ARB and TJM don't sell recovery points. Have not received the vehicle yet. So unable to confirm.

I bought a steel TJM bullbar. The TJM bullbar for the 2018 model has integrated recovery points. Steel offers more protection then alloy but is heavier.

lots of people use the roadsafe recovery points.

                            Thanks

I have a 2016 model and it’s bullbar is different.

the 2018 bullbar is around the 3k mark.
