2018 VX Vibration

Hi All,

As im not mechanically minded I need some advice, please.

I have a 2018 VX Prado which has been fitted with Smittybilt winch, ARB bar, intensity lights, dual batteries, compressor under bonnet, ARB underbody protection plates, backbone and rhino rack with Batwing and the BP51 shocks with 2inch lift. I’ve had the original tyres removed on day one and BF Goodrich KO2’s fitted.

The problem is, the car has a wobble or vibration. I’m sure I can feel it if the car is coasting at 95kph and definitely when it is in gear. The Toyota dealer thought the Batwing awning (in packed away state!) and Rhino platform may be causing it so I took those off and no surprise to me, the wobble is still there. I’ve had the wheel alignment checked and wheels balanced and rotated. No difference. Also, there is no vibration through the steering.

Any ideas on what this is? ARB had the car for a week and couldn’t figure it out.

If you're feeling in in the seat of your pants I'd start them looking into the drivetrain.

Many 150's have had their driveshafts rotated 180 degrees or replaced alltogether. Mine has has the front shaft rotated and a dampener placed on the diff housing and taken care of most of issues.

Toyota might also try to blame the front bar saying the harmonics of the chassis are being disturbed.

When did the wobble appear. It would have had no issue and then it had an issue.
The last accessory to be fitted would be the root cause surely.

If you have had the vibration since you got it I would suggest swapping the tyres over, as you describe the vibration it sounds like a tyre issue.
I highly doubt it will be a roof rack, compressor, dual battery or even bull bar causing the vibration you have described. Just because they were new tyres doesn't mean one doesn't have an issue and since you have never driven it with standard tyres you don't know if it was there from new.

Hey Roksy,
I have something similar, and at about the same speed.
How bad is yours? Mine is very minor and doesn't bother me. Sounds like yours might be a bit more annoying, or larger in the shaking size/duration.
I have the ARB bar and the 2" lift too. No winch, under body, or roof items though.
It doesn't do it every single time at that speed, so I figure it's just a bit of harmonics or whatever, on certain roads with certain bump frequency and certain speed.
As I said, mine is very very minor and a bit of increase or decrease of speed fixes it for me - I don't get it at 110kmph for example. But it's there.

I always felt that i had it before the bar and lift though. Felt more like a very small shake in the transmission actually.
Now it feel like the body/chassis shaking (a little).

Sorry, I can't fix your problem, Just sharing I have similar.

I have 2018 VX as well they drove like shit after I had tyres and wheels fitted, mine where done at the Toyota dealers tyre shop, so went back swap the tyres and wheels with some std ones they had lying around, all the issues went away, made the dealer change the tyres and problem solved. Not what the isssue was with the tyres but it solved the problem.

I have been battling with my dealer for 18 months now. They also fitted the damper and adjusted the shafts - didn't improve. Tried new wheels and tyres - nothing. Replaced shafts - nothing. Tried to blame the factory fitted ARB steel bulbar and told me the only way to test would be to remove it - however threatened that I would need to pay the labour should it fix the issue. Went through with that and removing the bar didn't fix the issue. Now they are saying that it's out of their hands and with Toyota Australia. Pretty poor form and obviously a common issue? I spoke with someone who got a full refund from their dealer (less stamp duty) with the same issue..

Find some one who has a brain and know how to use a pico scope with the accelerometer interface , this will tell you where the vibration is coming from, then the hard work is how to fix it , pretty impressive bit of gear if you know how to use it
