  • Double sided tape that will actually stick to the top of the steering column.

    G’day....

per above to mount a scan gauge.... Driving me nuts as I think I’ve tried every possible 3M tape out there!!! What have you used with success (that doesn’t come off when knocked)...

    thx

Scotch extremely strong mounting tape. $11 for 1.5m.

You do realise that the top of the steering column is not flat and you will have trouble getting double sided tap to grip across the width of the scan guage ?

I used the velcro patch that came with the scan gauge but cut it into two and used a piece either side of the bulge in the steering column. It hasn't fallen off in the 15 months that mine has been on the car.

      Cheers,
      Mal

Try 3M Dual Lock. I’ve used it to mount stuff on racing yachts and dinghys, and it’s never let me down. Even trusted it with my GoPro.

          Mmmm thanks’
for the input - I’ve tried most of that to be honest.... I was very surprised when the dual lock didn’t work as I use that to fit an O2 demand controller to the roof of my Cessna... I’m almost wondering if it has been sprayed with a silicon (I’m not the original buyer)...

          Will persist!

The likes of Armour all leaves a very slippery residue,
seems as though it comes to the surface again when the vehicle is in the sun. It could be that this has been used on your vehicle in the past.

I would have suggested a 3M VHB (very high bond) tape, also clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol or metholated spirit prior to application.
you might want to test the cleaning solution in a out of sight area first to ensure no unsightly marks occur.

Yes that's what i done, used an isopropyl alcohol wipe that are for cleaning sunglasses, tablet and phone screens etc to get rid of the oils. Then stuck the ScanGuage down with velcro, it hasn't failed in the couple of years it's been there. I've even pulled it out a handful of times to check and clear fault codes in friends vehicles and the velcro has stuck fast to the column and gauge.

I stitched Velcro to a dash mat and mounted 2 Scan Gauges above the instrument panel, works well as a heads-up display.
Just came back from the Oombulgurri/Carson River Track, Kalumbaru, Gibb tracks and the Tanami.
