  • 2010 GX Water Leak under Back Seat

    Hi All,

Well this is my first post here and it isnt good news

It seems I have a leak and I cant figure out where it is coming from so hoping you can shed some light on the possible source.

    2010 Prado GX

The water in pooling under the back seat in a little well where the seat belts are (see attached photo) every time we get decent rain.
Everything else around it seems to be dry and we cant see where the water is running in from.
We have tried using the hose to see where its leaking and running in from, but nothing so far.

There is no water on the interior roof of the car and the seats are perfectly dry.

    Check the seals on the
    roof rack or roof rails

Does the GX have rear air con? I'd think more than likely it has to be a leaking window seal or one of the roof rack/channel bolts isnt sealed.

Mother in law ridden in there lately? Maybe run a hose over various parts to simulate rain and try and find the cause.

If you have not driven in the rain (parked only) do you get water there? If not is the water relatively clean? I'm wondering if it might be leaching in through a unused bolt hole in the floor plan when driving. As 404pug advised check the roof rail/rack mounts for sealing although I would have thought there would be a water track mark if from the roof .

Left field thought, sprinkle some talcum powder around the area before refitting everything and see if that indicates creates a water track after the next lot of rain. Hopefully that won't be too long. My old XR had a leaking sunroof which didn't show for years due to a lack of rain

That is a very good idea, I was thinking dyes as you do for drainage issues etc., but totally unsuitable for this application.

How many times have you found water there? If only for the first time and you’ve tried to pinpoint were it’s coming from with no success, I would be thinking kids water bottle has emptied there. It would stay there for quite awhile.

Had a similar leak in my 2009 GX. The front seatbelts would be wet after a few days of rain. The water didn't seem to be pooling in the channels on the roof though. I found the bolts holding my roof rack on were'nt sealing the best. I put a bit of silicon on the bolt threads put them back in. I haven't had a problem since.

Yep the old captive nuts in the roof racks.. stupidist idea had issues with this on my 105 series and eventually got in the kick panels running down the A pillars and getting in to the wiring.. also had issues with aftermarket windscreen coming away and also letting water in so get on to it ASAP !

Im getting the same thing and didnt even think about the bolts holding my roof rack. do these bolt holes actually go through? thats a shit design. What type of silicon did you use to seal up the bolts?
