  • 150,000 km Service Questions

    Hi All,

    I have a 2010 150 3.0 Turbo diesel with 156,000 on the clock.

A Toyota dealer here in Adelaide said the 150K service includes replacing Timing Belt, and also Fuel Transfer Pump... very labour intensive.

    My questions:

    1) Is the fuel transfer pump definitely required or just a Toyota Service Dept. money maker?

    2) With just the timing belt, what is a fair price to pay for this service?

    3) Been reading a lot about injectors......are these necessary also? Sounds like about a $4000 job?!

Service quotes: Toyota dealer said $1440 including Fuel Transfer Pump and timing belt.

Another Repco authorised dealer said service is $980 for timing belt but without the fuel transfer pump - said it's not necessary. Is it?

Would really appreciate any clarity from your experienced heads!

    Thanks
    Timbo

$980 to replace timing belt sounds over the top. This has to be one of the easiest DIY jobs to do and the actual belt with new tensioner and pulley is not crazy expensive. Some owners will opt for a new water pump at this time so perhaps that was included in the quote?
The in tank fuel pump is an expensive pump (genuine) and does involve a fair bit of labour.
Mine is still on the original pump at 255,000k. Think it depends on how often you run the tanks down or if you maintain high fuel levels which is what I do.
Injectors are expensive and you’re at the time to have feedback values checked. But as your model is prone to piston failure, I’d be planning for that very big expense. My injectors were replaced at 150,000k, was about $2500 back then which was when “mechanics” said injectors caused piston cracking but in fact it’s the low compression from already failing pistons that gives the poor feedback values.
Modern diesels are expensive to maintain. Can buy a lot of petrol miles for a set of $2500 injectors and as for an engine replacement…..

I had injectors replaced at 150k and it was a complete waste of money. Still cracked a piston at 170k. The whole injector thing is completely misunderstood, I'm an engineer and only worked out the mechanics behind piston failure after my engine blew up. It has nothing to do with injectors. Only replace the injectors if they are out of spec or you think that there might be a problem with the washers.

Timing belt, I did water pump as well and was around 1000

BTW, genuine long engine with injectors, new turbo and upgraded pistons cost me 16k all up installed.

Yep, Some snake oil salesman are getting rich from spreading misinformation about injectors and selling their kits, thats for sure.

The fuel transfer system on the diesel 150 has been known to fail, and there is no warning. The engine will stop and the fuel gauge will still show fuel in the tank(s).

If you have a Scangauge programmed to read the fuel levels in both tanks you will see the onset of the event.
Normally the rear tank should drain first, then the main tank. If the fuel level in the main tank drops whilst there is still fuel in the sub-tank then you can start worrying.

Either the transfer pump has failed, the Venturi is blocked, the hidden second fuel filter is blocked, or even the well hidden breather valve.

My Prado spends a month or two on remote tracks each year so preventative maintenance and return-to-standard is my priority.
When I retire the Prado to a life on city roads I'll let it break before I fix parts like that.

Where do I find the Scangauge codes for the fuel tanks?

Do tell. What caused the piston to crack at 170k km? Also are the injectors serviceable or must they be replaced with new ones?
