  • 150KW 1GD takeoff hesitation improved on my May 2023 version - can the engine software be updated

I test drove a 2022 plate prado and my Oct 22 Prado both have a characteristiced "hesitation" / "delay"when moving from standing start or closed throttle to small open throttle. It almost feel like a "turbo lag". This "issue"is reported by all 150kw prado owners I come across.

I recently picked up another May 23 prado - the problem seem to completely disappear - now just slowly pulls away on small throttle opening with no "lag"/ hestitation. Anyone has similar experience? I wonder if the revised engine control software can be updated on to the older Prado engine

Short answer is Yes (at least for all 150kw versions as I believe its the same ECU config)

I have seen references online to a fix for low and high speed hesitation being available for those that are experiencing the issue and let their dealer know.

Checked on the Toyota Document Bulletin area and these two came up for the Prado:

HIGH SPEED HESITATION DURING LIGHT ACCELERATION TTNF-00991-2022.html 01/07/2022
HESITATION / DOWNSHIFT DELAY DURING ACCELERATION TTNF-00926-2022.html 24/06/2022

Maybe ask your dealer if one of these sorts your issue and have them do the associated ECU update.

On my 21 VX I just added the ECO/Normal/Sport Modes Switch as a mod and in ECO you do experience what you describe and in Sport totally gone and very responsive from light throttle. So maybe the Normal Throttle/Transmission Shift Map is a bit too ECO focused and they tweak towards Sport to remove the lag in the update.

Thanks for the info- I will be sure to look it up… what’s the eco/normal/ sport mode switch you mentioned

I had my Prado serviced last week and asked them to update the ecu software re: the above two TBDs, and I am not sure if it is my imagination, but when I picked the car up, the acceleration certainly seemed more 'lively', including from takeoff, or when driving and then overtaking ,etc.

Anyone else had this ecu update and would like to comment on their impressions ? (my are all positive after having it done).

I got the ecu update 2 weeks ago (and a scrape+dent...another story) on my '22, to fix the light load 1500rpm surge/stutter. Fixed the surge and smoothed out the low rev power delivery and now is less noticeable when coming on-boost. Nicer to drive and nicer with the throttle controller. A definite improvement.

Did you notice any increase in fuel consumption?

I think the fuel consumption has actually gone down a bit (not a lot, but certainly not up). The week after I had the service I went to Yamba for the weekend (300km each way, 100-110km per hour on the motorway) and on the computer screen I saw high 7's per 100km, and around town I am in the mid 8's per 100km, prior to the service, around town was in the 9's per 100km (and probably low 8's per 100km on the motorway). I have bullbar and AT tyres (standard size).

This is not verified by checking when I fill up, but i'll do that when the tank empties a bit more, but even if the computer readout is not 100% accurate, the readings are a bit lower than they were prior to the ecu update.

No idea. Don't clock up many km unless traveling.

My 2022 Prado had a similar issue. Just felt a bit laggy in general.

had my 18 month service last week and mentioned throttle hesitation.

The technician updated the ecu with the following:

                    2022 Prado ecu update

                    Remedy code: 22AUCQE-077
                    Symptom: Shudder/vibration

                    Cause: Incorrect software logic

                    Addresses the following:
                    1. shudder/vibration at approx 60km/h
                    2. Harsh shift from P into R, and/or N into D
                    3. Surge sensation during steady driving or on deceleration

Post the update I can confirm it’s driving much better, more responsive and generally smoother with better acceleration.

It’s definitely worth getting this free update at your next service.

not sure about fuel consumption at this stage.

I I had my 1 year service Dec last year and mention these to the local service dealer - They insist the services bulletins are for the old 1KD - even wrote it on the invoice, and a different service manager assure me that it is a legal document and they dont lie and I shouldnt believe everything I read on the internet. Had me almost half convinced - I was too tired to argue more and I was going to go to a different dealer to check.

anyone who can access the service bulletin in which it specifically mentioned it applies to a 1GD 150kw (post July? 2020) engine I would very much appreciate it if they can post up here.
If your service record shows your it relates to a !GD engine or the MY of the car and shows the software update I would also apprecoate if you caould post- obviously wipe out any personal information.

If this confirm what the local dealer is in fact telling me portky, I would be extremely cranky and certainly be discussing it with the owner of the business and share my feeling in relation to that specific dealer.

Here is a photo of the technicians notes.

I initially quoted the updates when booking the service online, that are listed above in this thread:

HIGH SPEED HESITATION DURING LIGHT ACCELERATION TTNF-00991-2022.html 01/07/2022
HESITATION / DOWNSHIFT DELAY DURING ACCELERATION TTNF-00926-2022.html 24/06/2022

The technician has comments that these 2 bulletin references are for a different engine, from 10 years ago according to his note.

He has quoted the update applied to my vehicle.
