On mine (the GXL) it lights up to show you if the reversing sensors are active. You should see a green image of the car and as objects get near the rear sensors the red sensor lights should flash on the image. If you have your reversing sensors turned off then nothing shows or if you have a different model with no sensors fitted I guess it would be blank.

i second this... and it will show you which side the object is one.

I'll third this have a look in your owner's manual pages 248 (parking assist sensor) and 250 (display) hope this is the answer looking for.
