I was wondering what is the black "button" or plastic just above the parking lights in the dash??

You probably need to post a pic. People wont know off the top of their head and by the time they get back their car, they'll have forgotten to check.

On mine (the GXL) it lights up to show you if the reversing sensors are active. You should see a green image of the car and as objects get near the rear sensors the red sensor lights should flash on the image. If you have your reversing sensors turned off then nothing shows or if you have a different model with no sensors fitted I guess it would be blank.

I'll third this have a look in your owner's manual pages 248 (parking assist sensor) and 250 (display) hope this is the answer looking for.
