New air filter needed @ 10,000km Service???

Toyota told me i needed to replace my air filter today when it was in for its 10,000km service. I was stunned enough when they told me this, when I saw the invoice and it cost "$57" I nearly fell over!!!

Has anyone else run into this?

Mines going in tomorrow so I will let you know if mine needs it, don't you have the capped servicing costs though, so wouldn't have been included in the that?

I didn't cop that at my 10k. Have you been in an environment that made that necessary at 10k service ?
I haven't studied the vibration at 1500 revs fix, but they didn't break your air filter while fixing ?

Have given me the old one. Have done SOME 4wding and SOME dirt road driving, but not LOTS. Certainly not what I would of thought would be enough in 10,000 for a filter. This was after they failed to look at the bluetooth problem, didnt listen/fix the problem with the rear seat belt locking, dropped off at 7:30, got back at 4:30, was told car would be ready till 5, didnt become ready until 6.

When I asked if its normal for a car dropped in at 7:30 to not be ready until 6PM (JUST A SERVICE), I was given a sob story of being down on numbers due to people being sick, to which I said "why wasnt I told this morning, or called during the day to tell me things were running behind schedule!!"

Toyota Brookvale - Pretty crap service if you ask me, they have a reputation for this too :-(

It has nothing to do with the KMs traveled. Judging where you have been in the last 10,000, mud, dusty conditions (out with Glenn :lol: ) then it may well have needed changing. But agree with MickL, they should have shown you the old one.

Hmmm, maybe best just to blame it all on Glenn and his reckless adventures :lol:

As mentioned, ive done a couple of 4wd trips and the inlaws farm has an 11km dirt road in and out, we have done that maybe a dozen times MAX (probably closer to half a dozen). Even so Id think a filter should clog up slower than that. Maybe I should just tell the handbrake that the only way to fit it is to fit a snorkel :twisted:

Its not such an issue as such, im just amazed that a filter could be clogged and need replacing in a measly 10,000km, if it drove almost everyday in majorly dusty environments, then I could accept it easier, just surprised is all I guess, wanted to know if any others had come across this?!

Why didnt they just clean it :?: i have just returned from a 13500 km trip with quite a few thousand kms on dirt roads and through mud and water, i "cleaned" my filter regularly whilst away and would be surprised if it needed replacing at the next service. Also i work in a very dusty enviroment and all of our earthmoving machinery, trucks and utes do a heck of a lot more then 10k between filter changes, once again we clean them regularly. Seems to me your service dealer is just looking for the easiest most profitable way to get your car in tip top condition.

Thx for the feedback Andrew, that is what it seemed to me, ill give it a clean out and see what it looks like (got the old one, but have not looked at it). When you clean them, what do you do, just rinse in water with a hose, soak in a tub, etc?

You must be up on the beaches?

The dealer you are using has a small service outlet at Mona Vale..... they have looked after me for the past 10 years or so, Only ever had one grumble (and that was wiith a new staff member). Drop it in at 7.30, and pick up before lunch. Try them next time, worth the extra 15 minute drive. Have to say they have been very good.

Paper filter air cleaners are not serviceable. You throw them away when they have lost efficiency.

Compressed air will sure make them look clean. But what you cant see is the fact that the compressed air damages the fibres and opens up the micron size. You then end up with a fine layer of dust inside the inlet tracts past the filter and of course grinding away inside the engine. You can tap them to get the layer of dust off them in the field to get a little more efficiency between services but thats it.

23yrs ago I was a mechanic with a huge govt fleet in glebe Sydney. We changed the air filters every time the oil was dropped simply because the grit and pollutants in Sydney clogged them in that timeframe. Even with this service interval we found fine dust and even grit inside the intakes.

I would be thankful that the mechanic has taken pride in his work, actually pulled the filter and examined it, and then gone and replaced it for you. $54 part on a $60k+ vehicle. Money well spent.

Will give them a try next time, im based up at frenchs forest near the high school.
